Today is Juliana Harkavy birthday and for fans of the Arrowverse on the CW, you may know her best, like we do, for her representation of Dinah Drake in the fifth season of the show.
Juliana was born in New York City, but first trained as an actor in Sherman Oaks, California at the Young Actors Space. While she spent most of her youth in Los Angeles, she also attended schools in New York and France! She even attended the Tisch School of the Arts and majored in theater at the Sanford Meisner studio.
In the comics there have been several Black Canary(s) but in the Arrowverse there have been four. In the comics Dinah Drake was the first and non-powered version. In the Arrowverse, she was actually one of the firsts, from Earth-1, to actually have the Canary Cry naturally.
In celebration of Juliana’s birthday, we wanted to share some of our favorite appearances of Dinah in the comics!

Flash Comics #86 (1947) The first appearance of Dinah Drake. Drake is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, but unlike later iterations, she doesn’t specifically have powers. In this specific comic though, she appears to be a femme fatale character that is more akin to Catwoman, in her stealing and taking advantage of the hero. |

Justice League of America #75 (1969) Exploring new members to the Justice League of America, the Black Canary recounts her victories and adventures in Earth-2. During her story it is revealed that she has developed the Canary Cry from her battle against Aquarius. Black Canary in this comic originally was Dinah, but it was later decided to be retconned to become her daughter’s introduction to the role. |

Green Arrow Annual #2 (1989) This is a subtle and interesting story. It’s a slice of life story, which starts when a child steals Dinah Drake Lance’s purse and she and her daughter, not unknown to the world of theft, go on an adventure to catch the young thief, while also connecting as a family. |
