With Rick and Morty set to return for it’s eight season, see our sneak preview of it Here, the worst place to be for a fan is right before the drop cuz that’s exactly when you want more Rick and Morty! If that’s the case and you haven’t watched Rick and Morty the Anime. We are providing this Conner’s Critique so that you can know if it will be worth checking out!
As always, we breakdown our reviews by story, acting and overall, so let’s jump on in!
Conner’s Final Thoughts
Confused? Don’t we normally do this last? Well Rick and Morty The Anime is run completely in reverse. With some disjointed nature at the front end of it. It can be confusing. A little bit frustrating but once you watch the whole series everything begins to make sense.
That’s part of the reason why we formatted this review this way, so you would know even if you only read a little bit of our review. That’s the most important thing about this series. Stick out all the way to the end or else none of it will make sense.
Overall 7/10
Overall, the animation is unique and interesting, the voice acting is on point, and feels very much as if it was edited in that style of dubbing. The intro song completely slaps, and there’s enough tragic bait and references to prior stories and characters to keep you interested.
I only hope. In the real series Project Lazarus saves Tammy like they did it in the Anime series.
Acting 8/10
The voice acting for Rick and Morty the Anime was spot on, felt unique, specifically to the experience of Rick and Morty. While managing this new genre, though, it was still able to feel close to the original series. The show introduces a new character named Elle voiced by Hitomi Sasaki, who does an amazing job playing her character aloof due to her ability to perceive all at once, but also in presenting it within the shell of a young teenage girl.
Story 5/10
The main story of Rick and Morty the Anime deals with the concept and idea of a bomb tbat specifically forces time to run backwards. Rewriting matter in the process and putting together cascading and intentionally negative effects. This leads to a direct assault by the Gromflomites who believe Rick created it, but Rick is just as confused as to where it comes from. At the same time Morty is stuck in a video game, which by accident shows Morty other potential universes, and introduces him to Elle.
Not wanting to believe that Elle doesn’t actually exist, Morty scours the Multiverse for her searching and hunting her down with a picture from his memories, similar to what morning Rick does in the search for Rick Prime.
Rick and Morty, along this journey, discover that thier is a sister universe to theirs in which time flows the opposite direction as a direct result of the formation of the bomb. Then Morty has to make a decision to keep his relationship with Elle, but doom this alternative reality, or to let Elle go, and save this other world.
All in all, it is an interesting story, but truly it must be watched as a whole, and preferably in one runthrough. Singular episodes can come off as quite confusing when taken out of context.
