Conner’s Critique: Futurama – Season 14

Returning once again, to adult animation, Matt Groening’s Futurama has returned to Hulu. Celebrating its 14th season and continuation through decades of content, we jumped at the chance to once again review this series.

As always, even with our animated series, we break down our reviews to story, acting, and overall. So let’s jump into it.

Story 7/10

There isn’t a lot of a through line in this season, as there isn’t in most seasons. The show does a very good job entertaining people watching with small standalone journeys. I will say though that they have done a good job remembering beats within the series, like the constant badgering of Hermes love life thanks to Barbados Slim, Kif and Amy’s new children, and Fry and Leela’s regular stagnated and ongoing relationship.

I will say though that it was a little frustrating watching an entire episode dedicated once more to the fact that Leela and Fry may not get together, fall apart, or aren’t right for each other. You would think that we would be past this in the series after 14 seasons. That being said, this episode did a very good job showcasing why they are together, and then again an episode in which Fry and Leela question their relationship does feel very much like regular and constant Futurama because they’ve played with it so much throughout the series.

Other returning stories of this season are Fry’s desire to want to be an artist, and Farnsworth’s view of humanity and his desire to live on are addressed and showcased this season.

One thing I wasn’t prepared for however was learning that Bender is a short King.

Acting 9/10

Billy West, John DiMaggio, and Katey Sagal once again do an amazing job voicing the three main characters of the show. While you can definitely hear a little tinge of age in all of their voices, it does not take away from the energy or the passion in their presentation of their characters.

Showcasing the rest of the cast Lauren Tom who voices Amy, Phil LaMarr who voices Hermes, and David Herman who voices Scruffy, and more, all do a wonderful job reprising their roles and continuing on as a main support for the many episodes and journeys of the series.

Overall 8.5/10

Overall it’s very much Futurama. I think season 13 broke a lot more molds when it came to storytelling, than season 14 has done, however, there is still quite a bit of fun and journey in this new season.

Conner’s Final Thoughts

I will specifically say it was sad to not see a Christmas episode this year, but interesting to see the aftermath of Christmas mixed with a story talking about the anniversary of Fry meeting Leela, and of course Bender. Being frustrated that Fry is making the date more about Leela when that is also the date that their friendship started in that suicide booth so very long ago!
