Guardians of the Galaxy was created as a one shot story originally in the group comic book series, Marvel Super-Heroes close to the end of the 1960s. Originally the hero group specifically was set in the 31st century and combatted an alien race who was enslaving people throughout our solar system.
This series and grouping continued into the 90s, but took a hiatus from the comics until they were revived in the mid/late 2000s for the Annihilation: Conquest storyline in the comic books, introducing a new team specifically led by Star-Lord. While the group had fans, and interesting stories, they became more of a staple when Marvel, specifically the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and James Gunn released the first film in 2014 and brought the characters to life.
With that in mind, we wanted to share our favorite Guardian of the Galaxy comic books throughout the history of the super hero group.

Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (1968) After Charlie-27 returns home, he discovers it having been enslaved. He travels the solar system to find allies to help free his planet, and as a result he forms a team new group specifically for the purposes of saving his planet and taking down the evil Badoon! More importantly, while characters like Charlie-27, Major Vance Astro, and Martinex are less known characters focused on, Yondu who most will know, made his first appearance in this comic book alongside the original Guardians of the Galaxy! |

Annihilation: Conquest – Starlord #1 (2007) After having been affected by the Phalanx, and having his implants corrupted, Peter Quill recovers on Kree. While on the planet, the government give him a quest to attack a Phalanx manufacturing facility with a group of other expendible warriors. While this is the first meeting of Rocket Raccoon and Quill, more importantly this is the first meeting between Rocket and Groot. Immediately the two strongly connect with one another, which is only made more tragic by the events that continue in the next issue. |

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (2008) After the events of Annihilation: Conquest, Peter Quill decides it would be a good idea to form a group of warriors to combat threats around the galaxy, instead of trying to stomp out evil once it’s already causing galactic troubles. For this team he recruits a lot of the people you would recognize from the Guardian of the Galaxy movie including Gamora, Drax, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot. That isn’t all though as the roster is actually quite large! If you want to get a good understanding of the basis for James Gunn’s films then you need to read this series. |
