Happy Birthday To Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson!

Brie Larson, or Brianne Sidonie Desaulniers as she is actually named, was born on October 1, 1989, in Sacramento, California. When she started acting she took on the last name Larson from her Great-Grandmother.

She was mostly home-schooled, but became the youngest student of the American Conservatory Theater. At the age of Six she showcased in interest in acting, writing her own movies, with the help of her cousins, and filming them in her garage. She says her inspiration for acting came from Jennifer Lopez’s performance in Selena. A couple years later Brie and her family moved to Burbank, Los Angeles to allow Brie to attempt her chances of becoming a star.

When she started acting, she got bit and guest roles on series like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Touched by an Angel, Raising Dad, Community, and Popular. However, one of her more impactful breakouts was her role as Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning in 2019. To date her acting has netted her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and was even named one of the 100 most influential people of 2019 by Time magazine.

As this article is dedicated to comic books, and the like, we want to show our love for Larson with our favorite comic books dedicated to the character she brought to the big screen! Fun fact about Captain Marvel, the title originally belonged to Fawcett Comics, which DC Comics sued for infringing on Superman. While that comic stopped printing in 1953, and the characters were later picked up by DC Comics, in the downtime Marvel Comics had gained the trademark and created the first Captain Marvel character in the 1960s, forcing DC when they wanted to use the character they obtained from Fawcett to have to be called Shazam!

Marvel Super-Heroes #12 (1967)
 
The very first appearance of Captain Marvel, or more accurately Captain Mar-Vell. Mar-Vell is a Kree military officer of the Imperial Militia who was set along with Yon-Rogg to observe Earth due to it’s development of Space Travel. However, Mar-Vell is left on Earth to watch over them and will later develop an interest in protecting Earth from the Kree, which will leave him without an ability to return home without being seen as a traitor.

The first of these two comics introduces Carol Danvers, NASA’s chief of security, early into the world of Captain Marvel, being a friend and ally of the hero, who was directly connected to and engaged in an adventure with him. While there would go on to be other “Captain” Marvels before her, this long standing relationship lends good reason why should would make an appropriate replacement for the mantel later in the series.

While she will eventually learn of her origins, and it’s connection to Yon-Rogg, Carol Danvers arrives in New York to work as an editor for the Daily Bugle, but at the same time, when she blacks out, she unwittingly becomes Ms. Marvel and rushes off to save the day. However, Danvers, at the start is unaware of her own adventures as the hero thanks to a mental block.
