Celebrate The Punisher’s Anniversary With Our Favorite Comics!

The Amazing Spider-Man #129 introduced an interesting character into the world of Marvel with The Punisher. This vigilante is a anti-hero that takes things to far by trying to take out and kill people who supposedly are above the law, and can’t be taken down by regular needs. With the negative nature of press toward Spider-Man, something like this was bound to happen with time.

The character first was showcased in 1973, but then got flushed more out by his appearance in Marvel Preview in 1975, where we learn what makes the character of Frank Castle so compelling. For modern day people, he is unfortunately championed by people who don’t really understand what his purpose is. Aggressive police officers who wish they could do what the Punisher does, wear his symbol. That pushed Marvel to double down and have the character himself come out and clearly explain that he exists to do his job in a world that still needs police officers to respect their place in the system, and that if they push into his realm, they might just become targets of his ire.

The character has had many stories and archs, but for the most point, he is a human in a world of super powered people who continues to be dangerous based solely on his strong will that forces him to prepare and workout constantly to be the best at what he does, taking out the trash.

Check out some of our favorite comics with the anti-hero.

The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1973)

Put onto the wall-crawler by a villian named as The Jackal, The Punisher sets his sights on Spider-Man. When Spider-Man showcases that the Jackel is setting everything into motion to force the Punisher’s hands, they part ways with the Punisher realizing who the real villian is.
Marvel Preview #2 (1975)

This is the first comic book that truly delved into the backstory of The Punisher telling about his family, and how he lost them as a result of organized crime. And showcases the reason that Frank Castle pushes himself so hard.
Punisher #1 (1998)

Frank Castle died. What happens next, is this series. A part of Marvel’s new “Knights” dark comic books that were designed specifically for more mature readers, Frank Castle discovers and finds his guardian angel who admits to him that the entire reason that Frank Castle’s family died was because he made a mistake and wasn’t there to protect them. As a way to kind of make things right, he grants Frank Castle away to continue his journey at fighting evil. But this time the evil is more than just men. It’s angels and demons he is taking on. While a lot of people where up and down on this series, I actually really enjoyed the twists and turns.
