SAG-AFTRA is announcing a Student Interactive Waiver Agreement and the Game Jam Waiver Agreement, to give game developers who are starting out, and continuing a way to work with Union Talent, in spite of the strike.
Specifically the Student Interactive Waiver Agreement is designed for students who are currently taking video game courses at an accredited educational institution. That way students can work with SAG-AFTRA performers specifically to satisfy course requirements during game development. However, to be able to apply, the project must be recorded entirely in the United States and must be owned by the student, as well as other requirements.

If you are a creator participating in a Game Jam event, you can apply for a Game Jam Waiver Agreement. For those not in the know, “game Jam” events are timed experiences where designers and programmers work together as a team to create themed video games from the ground up. To be able to qualify, the project may not include material recorded prior to the commencement of the event. Additionally session fees and secondary payments are deferred only if the project does not generate revenue. If the project does later generate revenue, SAG-AFTRA will help the participants sign the appropriate agreement.

Even though the Union is currently striking, they still don’t want to stifle the events that make gaming in the future possible, and these are awesome steps to that very end!
