Earlier this year San Diego Comic-Con launched its very first cruise, a collaboration with Entertainment Cruise Productions. This cruise took place on the Serenade of the Seas. A Royal Caribbean cruise ship sailing out of Florida and visited Cozumel and a couple other stops along the way. Our friend Alicia took in the experience, and you can see all of her points of views and video’s Here!
This was a cruise that, on top of being themed around San Diego Comic-Con, included activities, panels, and events with actors and stars such as Felicia Day, George Takei, Ernie Hudson, Warwick Davis, Mary McDonnell, Michael Trucco, and Robb Pearlman.
The main chamber of the cruise ship was used primarily for panels, orientation, and other activities while the show Hall was dedicated to entertainment, contests, and more private panels.
The deck of the ship next to the pool was also used for cosplay contest and even a party celebrating the first Comic-Con cruise.
While the exhibit hall and vendors section was not very large, the people in attendance brought quality over quantity. The cruise event went out of its way to rebrand several of its areas and spaces to match the theme of San Diego Comic-Con. The casinos gambling mats were fully replaced with Comic-Con Cruise themed mats, regular restaurants around the ship were rebranded and renamed. Things like Popeye’s Anchor Bar, Flash Gordon’s Bistro, and even a Snoopy themed cafe where you walk in through a giant dog house.
Well, there is definitely ways at which the cruise could feel more like Comic-Con, and improve for next year, this was a definite and solid first attempt by the International Convention. We only hope it leads to a larger and more jam-packed full Comic-Con Cruise next year.
