Movies Releasing For The Week Of August 17, 2018

With movies coming out, I felt it was time to do a weekly, movie release post.

So without much further ado, here is what movies are coming out tomorrow, and if we suggest you watching them.

ALPHA – Releasing 08/17/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 77%

The story of mans relationship with dogs, from the very beginning. A man and a wolf find themselves relying on each other to survive when the boy can not kill the wolf. Both separated from their pack, they travel together trying to reconnect with their groups.

While the movie is more arthouse, and the graphic show it, the cinematic beauty of this film shines past the horrible graphics. Additionally it’s a dog and boy story. Those always kill at the box office with the sentimental types.

If you loved films like White Fang, and Benji, then this film will be a beautiful movie for you. Fair warning though, while we do not know for a fact, most movies of this caliber end by killing the dog. So be prepared with tissues just in case.

BENCHED – Releasing 08/17/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Benched is a movie that specifically feels similar to films like “The Bad News Bears”. It’s about a parent, played by Garret Dillahunt, who wants to make sure that his child gets a fair chance in the little league circuit to play, and enters with the intent of making sure that the children having a good time is a priority. He then gets teamed up with the most competitive coach in the league, played by John C. McGinley. The two enter at odds, find a middle ground and grow, with one caring more about the kids, and the father beginning to care more about winning.

I would say it looks funny in parts, but doesn’t really provide anything new. The only reason to catch this film is primarily John C. McGinley and Garret Dillahunt. Don’t see this film for the story, see it, if for anything, those amazing character actors performing their roles.

JULIET, NAKED – Releasing 08/17/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 60%

A woman, Rose Byrne, gets out of a relationship with her boyfriend, Chris O’Dowd, who was obsessed with musician Tucker Crowe, played by Ethan Hawke. When she trash talks his album online, Tucker Crowe responds to her. The two form a bond and a relationship springs from it. When he comes to visit her, the boyfriend doesn’t know how to respond. Comedy ensues.

This looks like a cute movie. I will say, It’s hard for me to like Ethan Hawke, and hard for me to dislike Chris O’Dowd. This movie makes me like Ethan Hawke and dislike Chris O’Dowd. I don’t like that. It doesn’t make me hate the movie, but it does put me slightly out of my comfort zone. This movie wont be a box office hit, and it isn’t Shakespeare. However, if you are looking for a cute date movie, this one does stand out of all the other movies that are coming out this week.

THE LITTLE MERMAID (2018) – Releasing 08/17/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

The Little Mermaid is not made in any part by Disney. It follows the story of a reporter and his sister who travel to the heart of Mississippi on the story of a Circus with a mermaid in their freakshow. While the primary character does not believe it is real, his sister does. Then he confirms that the performer has legs, and feels like he was correct in his assumption, but shortly later he sees the magic that allows her to transform from a bipedal human, to a mono-fin sea creature.

This movie looks horrible. The acting is wooden. The special effects are from the early 2000s. The villain is a walking cliche. To not make matters worse, the story is told in what appears to be a telling of a story to a child from the reporter’s sister.

If you have young kids that love stories of mermaids, you are stuck. I am sorry. If you do not, stay clear.

MILE 22 – Releasing 08/17/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

A man… look lets not waste time here. This is a blow shit up, loud noises, action thriller. There is nothing even close to it in this weeks releases. I could sit here and talk all about the actors, Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, John Malkovich, and Ronda Rousey, … wait holy shit John Malkovich and Ronda Rousey…. back on topic. But you guys are going to buy tickets to see this, because your end of summer brains just want to see shit shoot people, and be shot by people as explosions go off in the background.

Enjoy the film guys.

PUPPET MASTER: THE LITTLEST REICH – Releasing 08/17/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 73%

The story continues, this time in modern time, and a modern setting. The dolls are back, and have found their way into the collection of another person interested in the macabre work of the puppet master’s collection. When the dolls are re-awoken and cause massive damage.

There isn’t much to say here. If you were a fan of the originals it looks like they really stuck to the same formula, and it’s not a reboot. You have to love that. However it is a little more comedy oriented, and more self referential, with characters in parts directly making fun of the premise of the movie within it. I will say, if you love Thomas Lennon, as I do, you will not be disappointed by his performance as he steals the movie from… well wooden murder puppets.

Do not bring the children, let them see The Little Mermaid, you… you see this film instead.
