Vortex 2.0 Issue #1 – Comic Book Review

Hey spooky babes and boos! Welcome back to another comic review by the one and only Nerd News Social. Halloween is right around the corner, and while we can’t go trick or treating this year or attend any spooky parties, we can eat a whole bag of candy and curl up with a scary comic! Well, those are my plans anyways (unless someone wants to invite me to a virtual costume contest!). To put us in the mood for all things creepy and chilling, I am going to be reviewing another one of John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction comics! If you aren’t familiar with John Carpenter, he is a legendary horror film director (my personal favorite) who has created some of the most iconic movies and vicious characters. His sinister team is writer Mike Sizemore, artists Dave Kennedy and Pete Kennedy, and Editor Sandy King who is also the co-creator of this series. It may sound like I am a little biased but I assure you that these comics are worth every bloody penny!

Our story begins with a gruesome graphic surgery being done on a man who looks like he has seen better days. We are aboard a spaceship 5,500 light-years away and the man on the table is identified as Chief Jake Dixon who wakes up confused and very much out of it. Commander Munron’s daughter is the only face he recognizes, since her mother was aboard the same ship he was rescued from after a mysterious mission gone awry. As he recovers and tries to figure out just what the hell is going on, he is triggered by the sight of a robotic implant on a crewmembers arm and attacks. It leaves the reader wondering… what has Jake seen and gone through? As Munron briefs him on all that he has missed in the last two decades, he is showed a children’s educational video about an organism implanted into them to make them feel better quickly! *sarcasm* we love creepy medical propaganda targeting young children! She tries to explain to Dixon that it’s not what he thinks it is, and not the same as what he had fought all those years ago. Horrified by what he has seen, he knows exactly what it is….. and no one can tell him otherwise…..

Artwork is absolutely stunning! It truly embodies every element of horror that it’s almost like watching a scary movie before your very eyes! I will advise that there are some scary images that are pretty gruesome, so if you are sensitive to that keep that in mind before you read.

Personally, I absolutely love the colors and how realistic the characters look. The cover is my favorite; the eyeball with some kind of parasite coming out of it both grosses me out and fascinates me. This is what I love about horror!

I have reviewed some of the Tales of Science Fiction comics already, which you can find here if you are interested. I am all about horror, so I always jump at the chance to dive deep into all of the terrifying worlds that are created for us. This comic is intended for mature audiences. Sorry kids, don’t want you more spooked than you already will be! Join me next time as I review the spine chilling second issue of Vortex 2.0. Stay spooky!
