Animal Control is back for its second season, see our review Here>. We are now back to talk about and review the second season!
As always we break down our reviews into three categories, Story, Acting, and Overall. So let’s jump in!
Story 7/10
The series picks up where the last one ended with Shred played by Michael Rowland breaking up with his long-standing girlfriend, but before Emily and him can connect. Emily has begun dating Frank’s old partner and friend Rick played by Kevin Bigley. It’s a regular and tragic missed connection plot hook used by a lot of series.
However, this show does a great job showcasing and flipping the Dynamics of the last season. Where last season we saw Emily piling over Shred with Shred being oblivious to her intentions and desires. This season shows Shred now panning over Emily with Emily oblivious to his desires as she is happy in her new relationship with Rick.
We also deal with Victoria potentially losing her citizenship and being deported back to New Zealand. Patel additionally purchases a house with Shred and dealing with the issues and problems with that, and Frank working with Emily to take down a smuggling ring due to missing the action of being a police officer from his prior journeys in his life.
Story-wise it’s important to say the show does a great job covering the episodic format with them dealing with one major animal issue at a time, and then for the most part, pretty much resets to zero at the end of the season.
Acting 9/10
Just as with last season, the actors all do a great job of playing the roles of their characters, so also building up and developing the lore and history and background of them within. It is nice to see Thomas Lennon playing main character Frank’s extended family, namely his brother who is still a police officer.
Shred, played by Michael Rowland does a good job this season showcasing his heartbreak toward his new found feelings to Emily payed by Vella Lovell, who is now the oblivious member of their “will they wont they” relationship. It was nice seeing and meeting Shred’s new love interest Chelsea Frei, and how she plays an extremely free spirit, and borderline anarchist.
Ravi Patel and Grace Palmer, don’t actually get a lot of time to shine this season with most attention given to Shred, Emily, and Frank. However, when they did get the time, they played their roles very well.
Overall 7.5/10
Conner’s Final Thoughts
The series is a lot more fun this season, with the longer format and switch to more of a underlying storyline. I do however find that Franks relationship with his family feels so toxic that it generally makes me sad, but that might just be my own family issues showing through.
