The chaotic mind of James Gunn has released an additional series set in the DC film world. This new series is Creature Commandos. We watched it and wanted to share our thoughts with you ahead of the new birth of the DC film universe, which will be solidified by the new Superman movie coming out later this year.
With that in mind, when we review a show we break it down into the categories of story, acting, and overall. So let’s jump on into it.
Story 10/10
The events of the last Suicide Squad film have occurred, Amanda Waller and her use of villains with bombs in their head has been noticed and laws were passed. Specifically the laws prevent her from using humans for clandestine suicide missions. With that in mind, she’s turned to monsters, sub-humans, and freaks as a way of getting around the law.
Therefore, she establishes the Creature Commandos. A team made up of The Bride of Frankenstein, no description needed there, Dr. Phosphorus, a scientist who was destroyed and reformed in a procedure, not too uncommon to Dr. Manhattan, Nina, a girl that was born with her lungs outside her body and her father performed surgeries to turn her into a fish person, GI Robot a robot designed specifically to fight Nazis. Also, of course Weasel from the prior film.
All of which is led by Rick Flag senior, a military man mourning the death of his son.
Their first mission of in their foundation though is set in a European style country in which a god-like villain intends to murder its princess and take over the throne with the help of incel-like foot soldiers. However, once they enter the battlefield, the question of who’s really the villain begins to make things difficult for the team.
Acting 10/10
Frank Grillo takes on the role left of Rick Flag Sr. as he takes over for the prior Rick Flag, and does an amazing job balancing his frustration with the death of his son, and his military man bravado needed to run a team of monsters.
Indira Varma and David Harbour do an amazing job filling the roles of The Bride of Frankenstein and Frankenstein. There’s something incredibly fun to what David Harbour brings to the role. Indira’s ability to shut down Frankenstein’s advances and her cold view of the world and her relationships within it is so fun to watch unfold.
Alan Tudyk returns once again to the DC animated world. This time he is voicing a character, or two, in the series such as Dr. Phosphorus. Phosphorus’s sadistic and evil way that he eats up the scenery and makes every scene about him is fun to watch.
Zoë Chao who plays Nina is a tragic character and Zoë does a great job showcasing her journey through tragedy, while playing the role of the team’s heart.
Lastly, I have to give it up to Sean Gunn who is the voice actor for GI Robot. GI Robot becomes a standout hit in the series pretty early on, and once the show gets into his backstory the fans for the most part fell in love with and champion this Nazi hating robot.
Overall 10/10
Once again, James Gunn does an amazing job using music to convey energy, theme, and emotions and this whirlwind of a series keeps you interested, engaged, and on the edge of your seat as you wonder what twist and turn will happen next.
While Guardians of the Galaxy could sometimes feel a little heavy-handed thanks to the inception of Quill’s tape player, and later Zune, the way that gun has incorporated the use of “in universe” and “inside the head” music, not only the original The Suicide Squad film, but also in this series makes it clear that he knows how to fuel a scene with music.
Conner’s Final Thoughts
I wonder if James is going to realize how big of a character GI Robot was going to be, given the political landscape that we currently live in. The overall troops and memes created of lines like “Oh no, Nazis,” and “Sounds like something a Nazi would say…” have taken over social media.
I will also say that it’s great to see Alan Tudyk voice an entirely different version of Clayface, especially since it’s such a different version than he voiced in the Harley Quinn animated show on Max.
I’m also ecstatic to see Alan Tudyk getting even more roles, because you know he went to Juilliard.
