Conner’s Critique: She-Hulk Season One Complete Review

When I was a child I knew of Hulk before She-Hulk, even though both were in existence before I was ever born. I learned of them primarily from cartoons and comic books. When I did find She-Hulk in the world of Comic books, it was the Sensational She-Hulk lineup. The Sensational She-Hulk series is a great collection of comic books that is the primary basis from which the new series pulls from.

With that in mind I was more than happy to jump into another Marvel series to tackle it for our reviews. As always we break our reviews down by story, acting, and overall.

Story 7/10

As far as stories go, the world of She-Hulk relies on the Sensational She-Hulk lineup just as much as it relies on modern day elements of the world. I honestly found that to be very upsetting, but it’s not their fault. The thing that upset me wasn’t She-Hulk, or its stories, but the aspects from the actual modern day world that they chose to add to the series. Unfortunately though, that’s just the world that we actually live in.

As Jen Walters is cursed with the ability to turn into a Hulk due to her cousin’s blood, she deals with a world that doesn’t want to accept her as a Hulk simply because she is a female.

This difficulty is compounded by the fact that Jen herself is a bit of a wallflower, but when she gets to become She-Hulk she has a lot less ambitions and is able to have the fun that she held herself back from most of her life. However, it was those prior choices that allowed her to become an accomplished attorney.

The series stories hot swapped from episodic to a bit of continuation until the conclusion of the season, but for the most part almost every episode is self-contained.

“This show is a procedural legal show set within the world of the Marvel comic books, at least it did its best to be.”

If you’re looking for a series that has a large storyline that would have fed into a full movie, while there are hints in the background, that’s not what this show was ever supposed to be about. This show is a procedural legal show set within the world of the Marvel comic books, at least it did it’s best to be.

It’s actually quite shocking how people didn’t get that going into the series. And with all the references to Daredevil leading up to his appearance, I was hoping to see more of Daredevil. I’m still happy with the amazing decisions and performances with Daredevil though.

Acting 9/10

First thing I want to say is that I loved seeing Tim Roth in this series as Abomination. Roth said he was more than willing to come back to the series because of his chaotic stands towards creating art through acting. The people in the MCU fandom benefited directly from his mentality!

Additionally, the inclusion of MadisonMadyson … Madisynn and Wong are so great that I only hope we get to see more of their combination in the MCU in the future. I smell a spin off.

As well, Jameela Jamil as Tatiana is an interesting choice. I love seeing Jameela Jamil act opposite of her actual views. You get to see the snark come through whenever she shills the exact thing she rallies against, as she knows here over the top representation helps sell her internal thoughts.

The title character of the series is Tatiana Maslany, who plays Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. I have to admit that I am a little surprised that the producer of the series made her so whiny. I know that there are some stories in the comic book of Jennifer Walters trying to come to terms with her life post-hulk. But it just doesn’t come off great and unfortunately some people have tried to attribute this to the main actress.

That being said Tatiana still does an amazing job at being charming in spite of everything that happens to her through the series. Whether it be the snark, fourth wall breaks, or just overall, you just wish Tatiana was your friend in real life.

Overall 10/10

I don’t know what’s more upsetting for the critics of this series, the fact that they created a female superhero television show, or the fact that they accurately predicted what those mouth-breathers would say to the point where they were able to incorporate their thoughts into the actual show. The series did an amazing job making fun of them in real time, and how they nailed some of the loudest of the bunch.

It has to be the second one though, right?

If you can look past all the fake hate online, and if you are a fan of the MCU, then I whole-heartedly suggest that you should watch this series. Especially if you loved the comic books for She-Hulk. It’s a fun series to watch. As I pointed out in our prior preview, see it Here, the animation and rendering for the special effects are not exactly top notch. However if you can put that aside, and just focus on the story, then I don’t think you won’t be disappointed.

Conner’s Final Thoughts

I have to say it’s nice to see some of the effects and stories finally start to be dealt with within the world of the MCU. These are events that have existed since some of the earliest films, like Edward Norton’s Incredible Hulk movie. So many things like the Leader, the Abomination, and more have been ignored for so many years. Now they are finally being dealt with and resolved in beautiful ways.
