Happy Birthday Emily VanCamp, MCU’s Sharon Carter

Emily Irene VanCamp was born in Ontario, Canada on May 12, 1986. She started dancing at the age of three, and originally wanted to be a professional dancer. However, when she saw her acting, she gets the bug and started taking classes to learn the craft. While she has played roles in Everwood, Brothers & Sisters, and Revenge it’s her work as Sharon Carter in the MCU that brings her to the pages of our site today!

Sharon Carter made her first appearance in Tales of Suspense issue #75 which debuted in March of 1966. While the character started out as the sister to Peggy Carter, she was later turned into the niece, and eventually grand-niece for the modern-day, and current movies, within the MCU. Regardless of the version, it’s the stories of Peggy’s adventures that inspire Sharon to joins S.H.I.E.L.D. and become Agent 13.

In the comic books, Sharon Carter has faked her death to go under deep cover for S.H.I.E.L.D., left behind enemy territory, worked as a mercenary, teamed up with the Red Skull to stop Nazis, battled the U.S. Agent, acted as the Executive Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., was framed for the death of Steve Rogers, and the character has a long history with Falcon, as when she sacrifices herself to stop Arnim Zola, it was Falcon who breaks her out of Zola’s captivity.

While in the MCU she has been set up to be the Power Broker, it’s not unlike Sharon to go deep undercover for a job in the comic books, so we will have to see how her story plays out over the next films.

That being said, this is the comic book round-up, so here are some comic books to help you connect with Sharon Carter!

Ultimate Spider-Man #46

Focusing more on the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents within Spider-Man’s world, this book not only showcases Sharon Carter’s abilities to stand down and fight along side heroes against villians like Sandman, but also shows how she starts to develop her hard stance on murdering high level threat villains.

Captain America #445

Revealed to be actually alive, Captain America finds Sharon Carter to have grown cold since her supposed death, and much to his surprise in league with Red Skull. However, they both need his help to prevent World War III. This comic shows her willingness to team up with who ever it takes to save the world.

Captain America #31

With Nick Fury leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. he turns to Agent 13, Sharon Carter, to helm the post while he is away. While it is only a 14 comic book arch in the position, it plays well with her relationship with Captain America, and their on and off history.
