Happy Birthday To Fan Loved Kevin Smith!

Today is the birthday of well loved fandom writer and film maker Kevin Smith. He may be well known for his work on films like Clerks, but he has written several episodes of some of your favorite shows, and a ton of comic books.

Kevin Patrick Smith was born on August 2 1970 in Red Bank, New Jersey. This is actually still the same place that he has his iconic store Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.

In 1994 he maxed out his credit cards writing, directing, and co-producing the low-budget indie comedy film Clerks. This film hit a cord with fans because at it’s core it’s about two blue-collar workers trapped in the world of retail and how they are more then their jobs. They are complex individuals with a lot of humor, and complex emotions.

Smith believes that a lot of inspiration for Clerks comes from the Richard Linklater comedy Slacker which was filmed in the creators hometown and it made him think he too could be an independent film maker.

Kevin Smith has not allowed the success in writing and directing, and not even the legions of fans of his work, to prevent him from living his passions. He has used it as a springboard for creating and working in fields he loved as a child. With that in mind, here are three of our favorite Kevin Smith comics we recommend!

Chasing Dogma (2001)

If you are a fan of Kevin Smith’s films, then this book is a nice marriage of two of his movies. In Dogma, the characters of Jay and Silent Bob say that the reason they found their way to Illinois was that after watching John Hughes movies, they sought out to meet girls like the ones in his film. However, only after arriving in Illinois do they find out there was no such place. This book tells of that journey and merges the Jay and Silent Bob timelines between Chasing Amy and Dogma. Written by Kevin Smith with art from Duncan Fegredo.
Daredevil: Guardian Devil (1998)

When Daredevil is entrusted with the life of a miracle baby, he takes on more then he would imagine with villains of all walks of life coming for the child thinking that it could be the anti-christ. A darker tone for comics, but it was the 90s. This comic was so well received and liked by the audience and reviewers that it opened so many doors for Smith in the comic book world. Written by Kevin Smith with art from Joe Quesada.
Clerks: The Comic Book (1998)

Continuing off where the adventures ended in the film. While so many of the characters of the world of View Askew was flushed out, in the late 90s, the Clerks troop was left to wander. Now two films later, everyone knows Randal and Dante so much better. If you are a huge fan of Kevin Smith’s characters, this would be a good item to pick up and read. Written by Kevin Smith with art from Jim Mahfood.
