Today is the anniversary of Robin’s origin. The first Robin Dick Grayson graced the pages of the Detective Comics 84 years ago to the day. In so many years of existence, there have been a lot of people who have taken over the role of the titular character and sidekick to the Dark Knight.
While Bruce Wayne is rich, and lives a luxurious life, he balances it upon a constant vigilant duty to struggle, fight, and train to keep the people of Gotham safe, and with it any Ward or Heir to his estate must also be as vigilant, and active in the protection of Gotham. No trust fund babies and spoiled rich brats here.
We thought, considering the anniversary, it’d be a great moment to showcase the history of some of the most influential, but not all, the Robins within the Batman lore.
Dick Grayson First Appearance – Detective Comics #38 (1940) While having eventually became Nightwing, and then later forming into a secret agent. Dick Grayson went from tragedy, to rebelling on his own, to forming up as one of Batman’s strongest allies, and stedfast adopted sons. |
Jason Todd First Appearance – Batman #366 (1983) While starting off as tragic as Graysons origins, Todd’s tale goes to a horribly dark place soon after when fans voted for the Joker to kill him off in a gruesome and violent way in the Death In The Family storyline. The character later returns however as the Red Hood, and while his journey in that role required Batman to help free him from his darkness, he now remains a strong figure for justice and is popular within the franchise. |
Tim Drake First Appearance – Batman #457 (1990) Unlike the other Robins, that has Bruce Wayne coming to them, following the death of Jason Todd, Drake discovers the alter egos of Todd, Grayson and Bruce Wayne all by himself. After failing to convince Grayson to return to the mantle, Drake took up the title having earned it. He later goes on to become the Red Robin and stands alone as a detective of almost equal if not better standing then Batman himself. |
Damian Wayne First Appearance – Batman & Robin #1 (2009) When Bruce learned of Damien’s existance, his son with Talia al Ghul, he was already years into training as a League of Assassin member. What he lacked was morality. Talia left Damian in his father’s care, and Bruce refused to give up fighting to show his son the honor of being a hero. When he left to find his own path. He kept the title of Robin, believing it his official birthright, and in future alternative stories, takes up the mantle of Batman himself, but with a dark and more brutal hand. |
