Movies and Videos On Demand For The Week Of December 8, 2023

The Boy and the Heron – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 98%

Mahito is still missing his deceased mother. Mahito then sets off for a world that is shared by the living and the dead. If you are a fan of Hayao Miyazaki, this film stands to become his next classic.

Dealing with the concepts of life and death, sorrow, and grief. Thanks to how beautiful it is, the story really is likely to be a major hit!

A Creature Was Stirring – Releasing in Limited Theaters and a week later Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

A mother, played by Chrissy Metz, deals with her daughter, played by Annalise Basso, and her condition by a series of experimental drugs. However, the plan to keep her condition is check is disrupted when two burglers break into their home. However, the criminals end up with more then they bargained for.

If you like movies where villians stumble upon a bigger monster then them, then this really feels like it fits, while also connecting to the holiday of Christmas. It’s unlikely to become a Christmas classic, but a good subversion from the holiday faire.

Detective Knight: Redemption – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 67%

Detective James Knight, played by Bruce Willis, is in custody in New York, but when a Christmas Bomber breaks free and seeks to terrorize the town this Christmas, Knight is offered back his badge if he can capture the monster.

This is a trillogy starting with Detective Knight: Rogue, which will also end with Detective Knight: Independence. One of the few last films with Bruce Willis, as he has retired from the craft of acting due to his medical condition. If you are a fan of the actor, then this is your chance to enjoy a new trillogy with him at the helm.

The Oath – Releasing in Limited Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Based on the book of Mormon, this tells the story of the warring Hebraic tribes that find themselves in Ancient America, with Moroni, played by Darrin Scott, who is being hunted by a tyrant King.

This film is very interesting. Darrin Scott wants you to see this movie, if you do or don’t believe in his religion. That being said, I’m questioning the Native America actors who are in this film, as well as Billy Zane’s decision to be in a Mormon film, but apparently this is not his first film in which his character is tied to the faith. I’m personally going to sit this out, but the locations of the filming do look beautiful, and if you don’t mind the fictional story’s origin, then this could be for you.

Poor Things – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 95%

Bella Baxter, played by Emma Stone, is brought back to life by Dr. Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe. However, her condition has made her unfamiliar with the way of things. Subject to the whims of her condition, she runs off with a slick lawyer, played by Mark Ruffalo, and learns about the world for the first time.

Did they make a Frankenstein movie? It sounds like a Frankenstein movie, but instead of being treated like a monster, she runs around learning about the world and thinking it’s the real monster. Almost like a mix of Little Mermaid and Frankenstein. I dig this. See this movie.
