Movies and Videos On Demand For The Week Of February 19, 2021

As we prepare for the opening of theaters and the return to normal life practices, we want to remind people that we are still within the thralls of a pandemic, and recommend people check out our article on ”If You Should Go Out” Here. Until then though, if you do go to a theater make sure it has a policy of requiring attendees to wear masks, and sit in isolated groups out of proximity of other viewers.

Blithe Spirit – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 26%

A novelist, played by Dan Stevens, finds himself in trouble when a mystic, played by Judi Dench, summons the spirit of his first wife during a séance. Now he must contend with his first wife and current wife at the same time. The wives are played by Leslie Mann and Isla Fisher.

While this is a comedy, and I hear Dan, Judi, Leslie, and Isla are good in it, if you are looking for a well-written movie, you might want to look somewhere else. However, if you are looking for a fun light-hearted movie, leave your hang-ups at the door and enjoy this quirky show.

Body Brokers – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 43%

Junkies living on the street, played by Jack Kilmer and Alice Englert, are taken from the streets of Ohio to Los Angeles to find a new way to live life. However, shortly after arriving they learn that it’s all just part of a scheme to fraud the government by having addicts recruit other addicts into the treatment facilities. Now the pair must decide if they want to get better or get rick through the scheme.

A jaded take on a very important tool to help addicts. This movie does help shine a light on the need to rehab the rehab system and make sure people are actually receiving help, and not being funneled through the system for profit. If you are looking for a crime drama, then this movie can help fill that niche.

Days of the Bagnold – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 91%

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, this movie follows a single mother, played by Monica Dolan, and her son, played by Earl Cave, after her ex-husband cancels her son’s trip with him and his new wife. As the six weeks of summer unfold she attempts to reconnect, but her son just wants to be left alone with his heavy metal music.

If you’ve ever felt the need to reconnect with your loved ones, or missed the chance, then this film will tug on the heartstrings. While still focusing on a comedy plot the movie still shows a true picture of a parent trying to reconnect to a child as they push away.

Nomadland – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 94%

Fern, played by Frances McDormand, loses everything she has, including the love of her life in a deep recession. Fern decides to travel through the American West to abandon her prior life and find a new way to live moving forward.

After setbacks and push-backs, it’s finally releasing. A tale of recovery, and moving on, McDormand does a great job, as evident by reviews, showcasing the journey of a person abandoning their life and moving on. If you are looking for a drama to pull at your heart this is your film for the weak.

Silk Road – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Ross Ulbricht, played by Nick Robinson, wanted to create something amazing, and awe-inspiring. What he created was the first digital marketplace. This marketplace quickly became a trading post and for criminal and illegal objects as it was unregulated. This accomplishment did not go unnoticed, as DEA agent Rick Bowden, played by Jason Clarke, set out to take him down no matter the cost.

A modern-day Catch Me If You Can, without the comedy, lighthearted nature, and happy ending. This movie goes straight into the gritty suspense genre for a gritty and thrilling crime caper story ripped from the not-to-distant papers. If you wanted a better, but glamorized version of what happened when the police cracked down on the internet black market, then this is the film for you.
