Pandemic Giving You Time At Home? Time For NaNoWriMo!

We talked about this event last year, and we can’t help to talk about NaNoWriMo once more as November comes barreling down upon us!

So what is National Novel Writing Month? It’s a month long event in November for authors of all stripes, skill levels, work ethics and genres to commit to work on or complete a story! If you want to know a little about the history, it was started in 1999 with only 21 people, and last year it had 455,080 participants! If you want a little more of the history, you can find it in our original article Here!

Rules and Guidelines:
The rules are super simple:

  • You must not start before 12:00am November 1st.
  • You may make notes, outlines, plots, character bios, anything else that could be considered preparation BUT, the manuscript itself must be a blank canvas till the designated start time.
  • It doesn’t matter what kind of novel it is. You can tackle any genre, style or form (Even poetry. Even Fanfic.) for your project. So long as you believe this work is a novel, it’s all on the table.
  • Your final work must hit the 50,000 word mark. That’s the only stipulation as to length; you don’t have to make it a finished work. It doesn’t have to be a cohesive story finished all the way through but it must be at least 50,000 words. To break this down for you, that amounts to roughly 1667 words a day every day in November. It can be longer, also.
  • 11:59pm November 30 is the final end date. You must save and submit via the official website before this time to be in the running.
  • The NaNoWriMo website is filled with great resources, including pro-writer pep-talks and guides to make your project easier. I urge you to check out the site before the first of the month to put yourself in a good starting position!

The system is designed to track and help you with your goal, but at the end of the day you manage your own expectations. Also, it’s important to note, if you do complete your project in the 30 day goal period, NaNoWriMo unlocks a bevy of awesome prizes and partnerships to help you move on to the next step!

    I Participated Last Year!

While I am very private with my creations, in an effort to be supportive, I am sharing the first chapter here on the site for my completed work from last year.

Let us know what you think, and share your projects with us as well!
