We love Hawaii and Maui. And although our trip is coming to an end, we have one more company out here in Hawaii we wanted to share with you!
Still remember that while Hawaii relies heavily on tourism, they have been hit hard by the pandemic and you need to take that in mind when visiting the locations. So when you stop by remember to be respectful, and understanding if things are busy, or take longer due to the influx of people who are there now due to the doors of tourism re-opening.
A couple of years ago we stopped by Down The Hatch, see the article Here. We’ve actually eaten here while in Lahaina for all of our visits to Maui since we were told about it by a family friend in 2015. Always remember to tap your friends for information about places to stop on vacation. Sometimes they are bad, but most of the time they are amazing.
Our favorite dishes from this establishment are the Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese and Mermaid Fries.
Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese
- Lobster, lump crab, cabbage, cheese, tomatoes, lava lava sauce, hawaiian sweet bread Served with Shoestring Fries.
Mermaid Fries
- Shoestring fries, truffle cheese, bacon, ranch, lava lava sauce.
We asked the people behind the establishment how the pandemic affected their business, and this was their response:
- The pandemic affected our business dramatically in all different ways. When the pandemic first hit Maui, Down The Hatch never closed, we went to Takeout and watched Front Street become a ghost town. We are truly grateful to our local community for their support. We have always taken pride in being innovative, however, this time it was crucial to think of ways to create a business, while also keeping our staff and guests safe. With those being the goals, we always have to come back to our roots, and even in the midst of a pandemic, we were able to maintain our vibrant atmosphere that could put our guests at ease and give them a little bit of normalcy in the chaos.
Thankfully, unlike other restaurants, Down The Hatch is housed in an open air space, so they didn’t even have to make adjustments to their property to serve the community during the lockdowns as outdoor dining was allowed.
Since the lockdown lifted, they have seen a return of their regular tourist visitors, ourselves included. The restaurant is walk-in only, but if it’s too crowded, you might feel the urge to skip the beautiful scenery, and just take your food to go. You can always just eat your food under the shade of the nearby banyan tree instead.
