The Westminster Mall has baked up something sweet, and it’s a hole lot of pleasure without the guilt. Yes, I’m talking about the Donut Life Museum. This colorful museum features an array of creative donut-themed backdrops and props that you can interact with and capture Instagrammable photos at every set. And let’s face it. The world loves donuts. Its ring-shape represents the circle of life, and what culture doesn’t love a sweet fried dough?
The Donut Life Museum is located inside the mall so masks are required, and Covid safety protocols are in place. Upon check-in, they ask that you remove your shoes before entering the exhibit. You are briefed with a short safety and “rules” video, and then your party may enter, one group at a time to ensure social distancing. Being that it’s an interactive experience, many props and displays in the room may be touched. They limit the time in each space to roughly 5 minutes per party which is plenty of time to snap some great selfies for the ‘gram!
Each room contains its own charm and theme, and I could tell that each artist who created it had a story to tell. The first room launches you on your journey through the exhibit, displaying a large passport and globe of our world and various flags painted on donuts. The second is a Donut Grow Up nursery with an adult-sized crib, the very bed I dream about napping in after a severe sugar crash. The third room is a classroom to educate all on all things donuts. The fourth is an outdoor garden area, complete with a hot air balloon to lift your imagination. The fifth room is more modern, full of iconic donut puns, a giant sprinkled heart donut, and flashing neon lights on display. The sixth is an infinity mirrored light room with sparkly rings dangling from the ceiling, one of my favorite rooms wherever I go. (In my opinion these rooms never get old and I can spend hours there, I’m such a sucker for them.) The seventh, and final, room is a carnival-like setting, complete with a ball pit that my daughter never wants to leave. She was swimming in there and literally and figuratively had a ball! The words on the wall behind her sums it all up: Make Life Sweet Again. Children bring out the child in you, and this room brings out the child in anyone. So don’t be afraid to jump into the fun and taste that sweet feeling of what it’s like to be young and carefree. (However, when I realized my daughter had lost a couple of her bracelets in the ball pit, the adult in me came back, and hubby and I did a deep-dive in to retrieve them. Luckily we found them all, and then some. Many little knick knacks will fall out of your pockets so ball pit lover beware.)
This experience lasts roughly 30-40 minutes. We couldn’t get enough of this place. I’d recommend coming with your family or at least bring a kid with you. And if for some reason you are at a loss for maybe how to pose or capture that perfect shot, they have some suggestions on the wall to make those creative juices flow. There is a sweet reward for you to take home and nibble on, specially sponsored by one of their sponsors, Krispy Kreme. And lastly, there is a shop for you to buy all the sweet merch you can afford!
