  • So, let’s take a look at the star of the show! Alola’s little dragon, Jangmo-o!

    Spotlight on Jangmo-o

I’ll be honest…. out of the regional pseudo legendaries, this one is probably my least favorite over all. I just feel like it’s whole line is overdesigned and kind of cluttered without a strong, recognizable theme to make it fighting type. Working in the Hawaiian word for lizard (Mo’o) is nice and all, but there are so many cool Polynesian fighting styles and weapons that could have been worked into this design as opposed to the weird cymbal and heart motif we got. Alola, while drawing on Hawaii as a basis also drew from a lot of other Polynesian cultures for bits and pieces of the region and lore, so we could have had something based on the many dragon or serpent like creatures of the folklore of Polynesia too. How amazing would a Taniwha inspired psuedo legendary have been?

Anyway, my design gripes aside, what do we know about this little lizard? Well, the Pokedex tells us that the scales they sport are actually hair that has grown as hard as metal. The sound these scales make when smacked together or against rocks are metallic sounding and can both scare off opponents and summon allies. They will never turn their backs on their opponents, instead fighting with a warrior spirit! Despite picking human-free mountains to live, the ancient warriors of Alola saw Jangmo-o as kindred spirits.

Of all the awkward middle stage monsters Pokemon gifts us with, this is definitely… one of them. The Haka in its name is probably a reference to the Maori style of war dance with that name, and it does slam its scales together vigorously as a precursor to battle. It punches foes so hard that scales fall of its arms. Bare arms are a sign of fighting prowess.

    Spotlight on Kommo-o

The name for this dragon is fairly clever. It continues on with the prior forms noise themed use of the scales, causing a comm-o-tion. It also references the Komodo dragon, which, while not Hawaiian or even Polynesian, is an island dwelling lizard. (Koalas, lemurs, orangutans and orchid mantises are also not from Polynesia, but instead from island or tropical places so just kind of fit with Alola’s vibe and therefore get a place in the Alola Pokedex as Komala, Passimian, Oranguru and Lurantis.) It also brings to mind the Ka Mo’o Nui, Kihanuilulumoku the god of Paliuli – a land of happiness and abundance in Hawaiian folklore. Kihanuilulumoku’s form was that of a giant lizard or serpent.

The Pokedex tells us that this Pokemon specializes in left-handed uppercuts! It will first clang its scales together vigorously to psych out potential opponents. If the enemy still stands before it after the display, then it deems this opponent worthy. Its scales are extremely hard, but do shed and can be processed into various implements. Even in ancient times, those scales were added to the armor of wariors, as can be seen in ancient Alolan art.

But is it a warrior worthy of your time in Pokemon GO?

With a Max CP of 3741, 222 Attack, Defense of 240 and a Stamina of 181, it’s pretty okay! It’s not hitting the CP 4200+ club like Dragonite, Metagross, Garchomp or Tyranitar… heck, it’s not even catching Goodra who’s Max CP is 3973… but it’s better than say, Druddigon who barely hits CP 3000? Dragapault is also a little higher up on the list with Max CP of 3993. I guess there’s no sugar coating it… Kommo-o is the weakest pseudo legendary Pokemon GO has to offer so far. Heck, even Haxorus, which is a 3 stage Dragon who we do NOT grant the rank of pseudo just barely snatches a Max CP of 4062.

Well, maybe its rare typing helps it grab more relevance? It’s a dragon and fighting type so it’s weak to dragon, flying, ice, and psychic type moves, and especially weak to fairy type moves. It resists bug, dark, electric, fire, grass, rock, and water type moves. So, not a bad list of resistances at least.

In terms of Fast Attacks, you have Poison Jab and Dragon Tail, the latter of which is STAB. For Charged Attacks you get Flamethrower, Boomburst, Dragon Claw, Brick Break and Close Combat, the last three of which are STAB. The Community Day charged attack option of Clanging Scales is also available if you evolve your Jangmo-o to Kommo-o before 10:00 p.m. on June 28, 2025. It’s a dragon type attack so is also STAB.

The shiny is easy to notice as it swaps yellow and gray for pink and yellow – strawberry lemonade colors! Perfect for that summer heat! Shame it’s weak to ice…

As always Trainers, I wish you the absolute best of luck! Stay cool, stay hydrated and well fed – how better to go about Catching ‘Em All!
