Sundance Film Festival Announces Their New Host City

The Sundance Film Festival founded in 1981 by Robert Redford became a more public festival since 1985. During this whole time it has been a film festival hosted in Utah, Starting in Redford’s ranch and then venturing into Park City, Utah. Slowly in recent years began transitioning to an online format since 2020. While the festival hold a physical presense, more and more programing is becoming available virtually.

The festival, even 20 years back, had already began to expand out from Park City, expanding to the neighboring community spaces in adjoining townships. With the space requirements for the Festival getting more and more unmet, the board from the festival has reached out and obtained the bid to move their festival to places like: Cincinnati, Ohio and Salt Lake City, Utah. However, after much discussion and decision making, the festival board has choosen Boulder, Colorado as the new home of the festival.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Sundance Film Festival to Colorado and work with our new partners at the Sundance Institute to ensure a smooth transition to Boulder in 2027,” said Donald Zuckerman, Colorado Film Commissioner. “We can think of no better partner to elevate filmmaking and storytelling in Colorado and look forward to celebrating the many creative milestones that lie ahead.”

Last year in Park City was the 41st edition of the Sundance Film Festival, and while next year, the 42nd edition, will be the last at this location, the City has done a valiant and amazing job at hosting the festival for 40 years!

The 2026 Sundance Film Festival will take place in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, from January 22 to February 1, 2026.
