We Are Venom – History, Movie, Comics

With the latest Venom movie coming out this Friday the 5th, how about a bit of what you need to know about his history, about his latest movie, and some must read comic recommendations? Easily one of the best villains in all of the marvel universe, he has bonded with so many characters including the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot, as well as Ghost Rider, Red Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Deadpool to name a few. Like Deadpool, he’s one of those characters that can span almost any comic or universe and even become a Venomsaurus Rex (T-Rex that has bonded with the Venom symbiote). And did you know Venom has even defeated Superman!

So how about a bit of brief history. What we know as “Venom” is actually a symbiote from outer space known as a Klyntsr. They hatched from eggs and can manifest any abilities of their current or former hosts, which means they have access to a huge variety of powers. For example, when Venom bonded with Spider-Man, Venom’s powers didn’t need Peter Parker’s inventions to allow climbing on walls or to shoot webs… Venom’s skills made that happen within itself naturally.

The Klyntar, as they prefer to be called, is a species that needs an intelligent organism as a host to act out their ultimate goal. To create the ultimate noble warrior to reach out across the galaxy and create, in their minds, a “better galaxy.” The Klyntar that we know as Venom, has been rejected by his own kind as “corrupted.”

The first human to bond with Venom was actually Deadpool while he on Battleworld. Deadpool found the symbiote’s prison and decided to release it which then allowed them to bond. He realized it was interfacing with his mind and returned it to the prison, when just shortly after, Spider-Man releases it and is the next new owner. Spider-Man eventually realizes that, though Venom made him more powerful, it was also harming him. Venom was then analyzed by Mr. Fantastic who discovered it wished to permanently bond with Peter. Peter wanted to reject and imprison Venom but Venom decided to forcibly bond with Peter instead. Luckily, by bashing into the bell tower of the Our Lady of Saints Church, Peter now found Venom’s weakness… loud noises, from the bell in that tower.

Like I said, Venom has bonded with a lot of people, and animals, in the Marvel universe. We are not going to go into all of them. Since the movie is coming out Friday we will talk about Eddie Brock’s Venom, played by Tom Hardy, in the upcoming movie.

Months after Peter rejects and believes he destroys Venom, Venom is actually recuperating and looking for a new host. He finds a perfect match in Eddie Brock who works as a journalist who falsely uncovers the identity of a serial killer but this lie is exposed when Spider-Man catches the real killer and thus ruins Eddies career. With Brocks hatred of Spider-Man, and Venom also hating on Peter for being rejected, it’s the perfect match. They are now together seeking out revenge against their mutual enemy!

This isn’t the first time Venom has been in a movie, remember Spider-Man 3. Or maybe don’t, it wasn’t that great. Now in this new movie, Venom, the story will focus on Eddie attempting to revive his career, after what I said happened with Spider-Man, by investigating the Life Foundation. He had no idea by doing this, he will end up merging with the symbiote. No confirmation if Spider-Man will be in this movie facing off against Venom. We will have to see! Regardless, I’m expecting amazing action.

So here we are at the comics recommendation portion of this article. I’m going to suggest just three, even though it is super easy to suggest much more, so let us know which other ones you like.

Venom: Dark Origin

There have been a number of retellings of the origin of Venom, but this particular version might just be the most twisted version of the tale. By exploring the dual paths of the alien symbiote and its most famous partner, Eddie Brock, this story shows the incredibly violent, and tragic, roots of Venom’s rage.

Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage

When the murderous maniac Carnage assembles a team of villainous symbiotes bent on destruction, Venom must reluctantly team-up with the hated Spider-Man to prevent wholesale slaughter.

Dark Reign: The Sinister Spider-Man

Mac Gargan, aka The Scorpion, is the increasingly unstable Venom who eats the limbs of his enemies. This union was was less of a partnership between alien and human and more like one of those things where a mass of alien goo drags the person it lives on around so that it can eat people.

Venom the movie comes out this Friday October 5th. I know I’ll be checking it out, will you?
