We regularly watch Marvel shows and review them. Marvel series do a good job touching on the comic books, bringing them to television, and throw in a dash of the fantasy mixed in. So when Wonder Man came out, even though we forgot that it was coming out thanks to barely any advertisements reminding us, we jumped at the chance to review the series.
As always, we break down our reviews by Story, Acting, and Overall. So let’s jump on into this limited-series.
Story 9.5/10
Deviating greatly from the comic book, this series focuses on Simon Williams, an actor in Hollywood trying to make his big break. After a disappointing ejection as a day-player-role in a major series, he stumbles upon Trevor Slattery, the Mandarin. The bond between the two begins to form and together they’re able to achieve great chemistry between the characters that leads to Simon Williams landing his childhood beloved role for the reboot of the series, “Wonder Man” from acclaimed director Von Kovak.
As the series continues on though Simon Williams realizes that Trevor Slattery is in his Life, not by choice, but as the two dodge candid footage of Simon’s powers, other actors vying for their desired roles, manic episodes of stress, and the dreaded self-tape.
Without giving up too many spoilers, this series is a breath of fresh air, giving a fresh look at the often rarely shown “human” street-level side of the MCU. While I personally have always been a fan of Trevor Slattery, and appreciated the avant-garde choices regarding the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, this series truly gives this character wings to shine above other sidekicks and supporting roles in the MCU.
Acting 9/10
There’s a real earnestness to the acting by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who plays Simon Williams, AKA The titular character of Wonder Man. Trevor Slattery’s over the top comedic style to the series as he helps prevent the show from truly being too awkward as Simon’s pain and strife as he struggles and fights for what he believes is his destiny.
Ben Kingsley gives the character so much depth, all at the same time, while allowing him the opportunity to redeem himself. Oddly enough by once again taking on the role of the Mandarin.
I must also give shout outs to Zlatko Buric, as Von Kovak. His outrageous director persona plays off so well in this series. Also, Joe Pantoliano playing himself is a perfect foil for the earnest love of acting that Trevor Slattery tries to instill in Simon.
Overall 9/10
As far as the series goes, the episodes were balanced. The journey was believable, you felt for all the characters of the series, and enjoy the ride deeply as you make your way through it. While I also loved Daredevil Born Again, and it’s off-the-wall drama and superhero antics, this grounded story about the pressures of Hollywood fame and the struggle to be accepted stands out as still one of my favorites Marvel television series.
Conner’s Final Thoughts
It’s sad to think that this is the end for the Wonder Man series. The characters are so much fun. Trevor is great, and there’s just so much more that he could do. I will say though the heavy concept of the drama of the series is well closed at the end of it. But I do hope that we get to see more of Wonder Man in the MCU as we go along.
