It’s important to note that we were only able to get review copies of episode 2 through 4 of the new season. With that in mind, though, I think that we definitely can give our opinion of some of the humor of this new season, and that’s what we’re doing here today.
As always we break down our reviews into three categories, Story, Acting, and Overall. So let’s dust off our portal gun and jump back into it.
Story 9/10
The season starts off with a bang, that pretty much all fans would agree is a tribute to the classic over the top style of Rick and Morty. They start off with a bang referencing back to the early years, while also wrapping up Evil Morty, all in the first episode!
The show then kicks off with what would appear to be an alternative reality. The episode journeys return to self-contained adventures, and doesn’t feel like it connects to a larger journey as prior seasons. That being said, episode 2 continues to be an incredibly fun, emotional, and psychological journey into the mind and adventures of Rick Sanchez.
The show then continues into the further episodes while once again returning to the same gory gross out comedy of prior years with the sardonic energy of Rick and Morty’s relationship being speed run through a couple genre specific adventures. That being said, the new season’s stories feel like a return to earlier seasons’ style. Each episode follows the “Rick has plans,” “Rick is challenged by the world,” and “Rick finds a way to overcome dynamic,” trope.
Acting 8/10
Harry Beldon who plays Morty does some heavy lifting in the first episode, as he once again hits double duty. Playing two distinct different personalities of the same character. Ian Cardoni also does a wonderful job playing multitudes of Rick, as he delves into his multiple versions of himself.
In fact a lot of this season is about people playing different versions of themselves, and hiding their true identity. It’s a fun journey, and the season really holds the attention of it’s viewers.
Overall 8/10
The season feels classic, while also being a solid and new journey in the world of Rick and Morty. Whether you’ve felt that the show has dropped off, or never liked the prior seasons, the series will probably never have as awesome a start and season going forward.
Conner’s Final Thoughts
The first episode of Rick And Morty Season 9 is available on HBO MAX, and episodes are dropping weekly on Adult Swim. If you want to watch this series, there are many ways to enjoy it, and with all of the ways to watch it, jump on it. It’s worth it!
