We love the world of Rick and Morty, so when we heard that President Curtis was getting his own spin-off series, we jumped at the chance to get a sneak preview of the new season.
With that in mind, we break down our reviews into the categories of story, acting, and overall. Let’s jump into this new franchise.
Story 7/10
A lot of people are comparing this to the X-Files of the world of Rick and Morty. What it actually is, is the everyday experiences of President Curtis in the world of Rick and Morty. There are apparently tons of things that are constantly happening in that world, and we normally only see the ones large enough, or destructive enough, to affect Rick’s everyday life.
However, apparently in the worlds of Rick and Morty, there’s so much more going on regularly, Mythical creatures, next-wave technology, and so much more.
That’s the stuff that President Curtis’s new series focuses on. More specifically the stuff that deals with the United States of America, it’s history, and things that directly affect President Curtis himself.
Throughout the series President Curtis is dealing with things like the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, the United States prison specifically for mythological and creatures and monsters, events dealing with his own personal staff, his head of security O’Doyle, a half human half leprechaun who hates his heritage, and Banks, a cyborg modified and upgrade with technology who has no memory of her existence before the implant.
I’ll honestly say that the things that they deal with on a regular basis are a little weird, specifically with the fact that they’re happening at all times, but the world of Rick and Morty has set this up with things like aliens hiding in caves on Earth, giant packs of vampires infiltrating schools as gym teachers, and all the throwaway gags that Rick and Morty uses to fill out their world.
At the end of the day, the stories are definitely interesting, and President Curtis is more then enough of a foil to carry the show thanks to the great work of Keith David.
Acting 7/10
Keith David does a wonderful job returning as President Curtis. There’s a lot more depth given to this character through the series. We meet his ex-wife, and see the petty steps that President Curtis takes to play Batman, as they put it in the series, and how childlike he can be at times, all things that have been set up in the world of Rick and Morty and add flair to the character.
Jim Rash and Stephanie Beatriz disappear into their characters O’Doyle and Banks. I legit could barely tell it was definitely Beatriz as Banks, and while at several times you can hear Jim Rash’s voice as O’Doyle, his character work as O’Doyle is pretty impressive, and a lot more well-rounded than roles in the past, like Marquess of Queensberry from Mike Tyson’s mysteries. In the end, Jim Rash’s character feels less like a typical Jim Rash character, and more like like something new for him to sink his teeth into.
David Cross, is a fun addition to the series as well as well. I originally do not think he would show up in many episodes, but he does show up quite a bit. It is a lot of fun and David Cross does a great job playing the character with a level of reverance and cynicism.
Overall 6.5/10
If you’re looking for Rick and Morty, the energy isn’t exactly quite there, but it does fill out some of the nooks and crannies of the world, namely Earth, of Rick and Morty. I wonder how much of it will become regular lore of the Rick and Morty Universe, but Keith David really makes you want to keep coming back and watching more episodes.
Conner’s Final Thoughts
We’ve actually got a couple final thoughts for you this time. I loved the lineup of commercials and advertisements that they did for this series. Showing the characters of Rick and Morty watching segments of the episodes and then giving their opinions in world as if it was the president, but also a TV series was incredibly hilarious and well done.
My other final thought is specifically regarding something that happens at the end of every episode. In the series President Curtis sings in the shower, songs that summarizingly the episode. In the first episode, it seems a little annoying, but by the third episode, I was looking forward to them at the end of the episode. They are hilarious, fun, and enjoyable. It really does grow on you.
