Today is the anniversary of the creation of Beast Boy.
Beast Boy, or more accurately Garfield Mark “Gar” Logan, is a superhero in the world of DC Comics. The character was created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Bob Brown. The power of Beast Boy, or Changling as he has gone back at times, is the ability to transform into any animal he chooses. His abilities are the result of a rare lethal disease called Sakutia which kills all except green monkeys. His parents used an untested science experiment that turned him into a green monkey for 24 hours, to save him, but the serum has a permanent effect, as well as allowing him his super power.
The name Beast Boy was not always held by this character, but this version of him has stood the test of time, while the prior version was simply run of only 15 comic books.
This character was specifically created with the intent of being a child, specifically to connect to the children readers of comic books, and to showcase how life was changing for children in the world, as they took on more agency and identity.

The Doom Patrol #99 (1965) The guardian of Beast Boy has been embezzelling his estate, and as such plans to kill off the ward. That’s where the Doom Patrol steps in, saves his life, and leads to Steve Dayton and his wife adopting Beast Boy. |

Teen Titans #50 (1977) The Tean Titans are facing a new super-villain, called Captain Calamity, but there are more matters to be handled. With that in mind, new heroes, including Beast Boy, are recruited by the Teen Titans to deal with a series of mysterious disasters. This is the first time that Beast Boy was introduced to the team, and also the first time his acting career in Space Trek: 2022 is mentioned where he portrays an alien. |

Tales of the New Teen Titans #3 (1982) A retelling of Changeling’s (or Beast Boy’s) origin, and early life. Explaining his father’s attempt to save his life, and accidentally gaining of his shape-changing powers. He even recounts his evil guardian Nicholas Galtry and adopted parents Steve and Rita Dayton. |
