Now that pennies are no longer minted, the coins were collected from Guest Services, the Casino, the Finance Department, and even more. The Holland America Line took all the pennies from their six Princess Cruises ships sailing in Alaska and collected, counted, rolled, and transported them to the Ketchikan community of Alaska.
Crew members aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zaandam, gathered nearly 1,000 pounds of pennies for the donation.
The collection totalled $5,000 and donated them in total to Scouting America Troop 4 and Troop 2004 in July. The initiative was designed to give the ships excess pennies a new purpose by funding local Scouts and celebrate the longstanding relationship with Alaska port communities.
This was the Holland America Line now joining its sister brand, Princess Cruises, which also contributed pennies collected from six of its ships sailing in Alaska.
