Conner’s Critique: What We Do In The Shadows – Season 5

Are you a fan of we doing the shadows? Will they just wrapped their fifth season. We love the show and as always, we’re more than willing to talk about it and break down our final thoughts and rate it. As always, we break down our views by story, acting, and overall. So let’s jump on it.

Story 7/10

This season story is a little bit different than last, the show doesn’t worry about making giant strides and completely main actions on its head. It’s almost as if every season can stand alone on its own. Last season focused a lot on growth parenthood and following your dreams while this season, pretty much focuses on the repercussions of Guillermo finally being pushed too far and waiting too long.

Last season concluded with Guillermo going to his friend Derek and asking him to bite him and turn him into a vampire. Unbeknownst to Guillermo, though this is the greatest sin that a familiar could ever cast upon their master. It is the greatest pleasure for a master to turn their familiar into a vampire and the greatest betrayal for a familiar to go behind their back.

This solidifies one of the main themes of this season, which is regret while the other half of the concept of the series season is not fitting in and being ostracized by the group. Solely but surely one member after another learns of Guillermo’s condition as an internal struggle within himself prevents him from becoming a full vampire. While the group as a whole has not been overly affectionate or kind to Guillermo over the years, they understand the idea of not fitting in. They’re gruff demeanor however prevents them from being open with others about their true feelings. This is showcased in an amazing couple final episodes of the season. Where Guillermo is about to go on the run and each vampire visits him to pass condolences and wish him well.

Acting 7/10

Well, last season focused a lot more on Colin Robinson and was able to show not only the horrors of uncanny valley of CGI, but the scope and range of Mark Proksch who plays the energy vampire. This season, however, focused primarily on that of The Guide played by Kirsten Shaw and Harvey Gillian who plays Guillermo.

The two take center stage as they go through their own personal journeys and are really given the ability to explore and express themselves in the character. Another voice I want to shout out in the series cast is Derek, who is played by Chris Sandiford, who has had quite the journey through the series. From being a would-be vampire hunter to a vampire, to Guillermo’s sire, it was quite the journey for this character. It was nice to see more of him this season.

Overall 7/10

Well I would have liked to see some changes take effect and hold, much like last season. Nothing ever really changes on the show. Which might be a testament to the agelessness of vampires and how their world never really ever fully changes, as the group as a whole has not really adapted to or accepted modern society or technology into their lives. And Matt Berry is once again the king of comedy.

Conner’s Final Thoughts

I can’t wait to see where this show takes us, it is amazing to think of how many seasons it has had, but I worry that there’s only so many times in which they can build up a scenario and then reset back to zero for the next season.
