Captain America #1 (1941) Bucky Barnes in the comics was not the same as he was in the films, not at first. The first iteration of the character is more of a dorky child like figure, a “mascot” for the camp that Captain America operates out of. However, when Bucky walks in on Cap changing and realizes it’s Steve Rogers in the uniform, Bucky becomes his sidekick, to keep Roger’s secret! |

Captain America #1 (2005) At the beginning of this volume of Captain America comics, while it doesn’t list him by name yet, an unknown assassin and hired gun begins moving things in the background, collecting items, and taking out people. It’s later revealed in the series that this person is the Winter Soldier, and that it is Bucky, but it’s a facinating return of the character, and utilizes a lot of flashback to showcase Captain’s relationship with his friend. |

Captain America #34 (2008) As evil corporations mess with the livelihood of Americans, Bucky, having taken up the shield and title of Captain America after Roger’s death in Civil War, must prevent A.I.M. and R.A.I.D. from taking advantage of the chaos to steal Wall Street’s Gold Reserve. All while brainwashed S.H.I.E.L.D. agents begin firing upon protestors. With Captain America gone, it’s nice, even though he has his sordid history that will come back to bite him, that Bucky gets the chance to done the title. |
