Sodium is a wonderful tool for food, it helps raise tastes to amazing levels, but it will cause lots of harm to your health and lead to many health issues.
However, many people don’t want to enjoy low salt food in their everyday life, as they find it flavorless and bland. With that in mind Kirin has created an interesting solution that will help those who are health minded, or those that have no other choice then to cut down on salt from their diet.
The way the spoon works is that in food and sauces, Na+ particles will typically gently flow through the food, but will not be picked up by the tongue’s taste buds unless they directly come into contact. They just flow freely. The Kirin Electric Spoon will place a mild electrical current through the food as you eat it, causing the Na+ ions to bind together and cling to surfaces like your tongue, allowing you to get more salt flavor from the food, without having to add more salt to the dish!
The spoon itself has four levels of current, which will intensify the flavor, and can be cleaned easily by removing the spoon portion from the base and rinsing under the sink. It is not dishwasher safe.
The Kirin Salt Spoon even was an honoree of the 2025 CES Innovation Awards in the field of Accessibility and AgeTech.
