Titan Comics produces a lot of great comics, either by working with existing IP, or by telling their own stories. Some of our favorite properties are the ones they release under Hard Case Crime, their Crime Pulp line-up of stories. Noir Burlesque is just one such story. This is a one-off comic book created by and drawn by Enrico Marini.
So let’s jump into our thoughts in our newest comic book spotlight!
Basic Synopsis
The story picks up with most of the world flushed out, but with us none the wiser. As the story continues, we slowly get introduced to all the rich information of the story, as every character has backstory, chips on their shoulders, and rich designs waiting for us to discover them as the story continues.
Our man character is Terry, who arrives back in town after having fought in the war, to a world that he is remembered in, but not very welcome. He only returned because his brother-in-law made some mistakes that placed him in the crosshairs of Terry’s old world in the criminal underground.
Now paying for the debts owed end up costing him more then he wants to pay, and all along the way dealing with his ex-lover who is engaged to the very man holding his deceased brother-in-law’s debt.
Nothing is easy, and everyone has an angle. All he wants to do is get his sister out of the thumb of these mobsters and get out once again.
My Take
The story is a pretty engaging one. The concept is not too uncommon in the Noir world, but there is a reason that these tropes work so well, they are engaging. The thing that makes this comic books however stand out is how every character seems to have their own story, even if we don’t get to see it all, none of the players exist for the sake of just being a goon in the hero’s way.
I could easily see this story becoming a black and white movie, and I frankly would love it, as a comic, we aren’t treated to the action as good as it can be, but it still holds solid throughout the piece.
