Conner’s Critique: Killer Cakes

We love Halloween here at Nerd News Social, it’s one of our favorite holidays. So when we saw that Matthew Lillard, D&D Daddy and Horror icon, we jumped at the chance to check it out ahead of time.

While this is a reality show contest, we plan to keep reviewing the show under our traditional format, story, acting, and overall. With of course some minor tweaks. So let’s jump on into it!

Story 7/10

Unlike a traditional show with a story, a reality TV show specifically deals with the idea and planning of a live journeys. However, this show does have some specifically scripted moments in the form of the special effects crew, that not only work along with the showrunners, but also help out the contestants in designing and building their VFX for the contest’s cakes.

Due to the horror nature of the show, they like to show off early at the beginning of each of the two episodes. Some techniques they showed off was that of a severed head, and turning one of them into a zombie.

Otherwise, the story is simply the challenges the bakers have to compete against, which in this short series is a cake that rises up when it is killed and a possessed cake.

While a lot of reality cooking shows will controll a lot of the options and things the group will make, I love how this show specifically allowed the products to be primarily the choice of the bakers. It really allowed them to showcased their skills and for them to be able to create fun concepts.

Acting 6/10

Instead of talking about the acting skills of the host, Matthew Lillard, which in this series are a little bit campy but on point, we’re going to talk about the characters that compete in the show. No one really stands out as a villain or someone to vote against, all of the duos of chefs seem to work great together, and I do love how they went through each of their’s backstories, although it took a little bit to get to all of them eventually.

I found myself rooting very hard for one specific team, and I’m glad to say that from the very beginning, just based on their story and how well they work together, I picked a team that ended up winning the entire contest.

Overall 7/10

The one thing I will specifically say about this series is that the two-episode run was very short. I don’t know why they needed to break it into two episodes. They probably could have done this as a one-episode special, doing it as two episodes eludes to the idea that there’ll be more to watch, but then just hard stops and ends.

There’s definitely something here that I would want to watch more of, but we’ll have to wait and see if Amazon and Matthew Lillard want to keep this show running.

Conner’s Final Thoughts

There are so many different baking shows and themed contest baking shows that it’s easy to get lost in the sea of content. What I will say that this show has, which others don’t, is the VFX and special features the cakes can do and the way they treat it as a partnership between the bakers and the skilled VFX workers. It’s not just the responsibility of the bankers to make it work. Also, if you have a thing for special effects, definitely might want to check out this show for just the cool things they make the cakes do.
