At the Crunchyroll panel, I had the pleasure of interviewing and speaking with director of events Adam Sheehan. Here are a few things he had to say about the expo and how to prepare for it!

What made Crunchyroll Want to Do An Expo?

Adam started with Crunchyroll about three years ago. On day two of the job, Kun Gao approached him and presented him with the idea of putting on a convention. Many months later, the team thought they could pull it off. They teamed up with Left Field, which does many other conventions. Crunchyroll is based from San Francisco and wanted to find a local location to host the expo. They found a place in Santa Clara, California in 2017 to put out anime for fans. One thing that they wanted to put out in the expo was to do something different and unique. One of the biggest benefits of Crunchyroll is access to Japan and speak out to so many different fans. Some unique things that were put out were CRX chat, which was said to be similar to like a Ted Talk, but for anime and pop culture. Also changing up things in artist ally to make it more accessible different. If there was a panel with table, chairs, and front microphones, it was more like couches and lavaliere microphone with a more laid-back environment. Adam mentioned that the biggest compliment from fans for last years expo was that they were shocked it was a first year con and they really enjoyed it.

Did you expect a first year con to be as big as it was and is that why it moved to San Jose?

There were actually 16,000 attendees last year and the capacity was only supposed to hold 15,000 people. Crunchyroll felt great about marketing confident about people attending, especially with the guests and the programs going on. The panels ended up filling up and many exhibitors were visited and explored. The fans that attended and exhibitors were very happy with the turn out and the second the con was over, it was agreed that Crunchyroll needed more room to grow from last years turn out.

What can we expect from this years expo and what changes are made from last year?

It was said that were going to have a great line up. We have producers from Japan (dolly and the franks), voice actors from My Hero Academia, variety of guests coming. There was also a new café announced the Hime Café, which is based on Crunchyroll mascot Hime. It was also said that there are going to be different and unique layouts that we have not seen at other cons.

Anything you would like to put out to fans to prepare for the expo?

Get your tickets sooner than later, especially the tickets you want. There is going to be a big spike in tickets, especially when there are big things that are going to be announced closer to the expo. There is limited space, but plan ahead and there’s so much to do inside the convention and out and basically to just plan ahead.
