Movies and Videos On Demand For The Week Of August 18, 2023

The Adults – Releasing in Limited Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 86%

Eric, played by Michael Cera, returns home to spend time with his sisters, played by Sophia Lillis and Hannah Gross. However as the familiarity of this world pulls him in for longer and longer extensions of his trip, he finds himself falling back into the same relationships he had when he was a child.

The relationships between siblings is a major plot of this film. The conflicts, love, and frustrations between the three really shows off the acting skills of Cera, Lillis and Gross. This is a heavier story, with loss drama then some other traditional films. A Solid watch.

When Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes, played by Xolo Maridueña, mistakenly gains super powers he puts a target on his back, and must work quickly to learn how to master the ability. If he can’t get control of the scarab tech that is binded to his spine, he might loose his entire family.

There is something that the trailers focus on that really tugs at me and makes me want to see this film. The movie is all about family. Love, and connections between them, and honor amoungst them. I respect the hell out of that and can’t wait to see how being a super hero works when you are part of a close and committed family.

Dead Shot – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 64%

When travelling the border, an ambush leads to the murder of a retired Irish paramilitary soldier’s wife. The soldier left for dead, played by Colin Morgan, now seeks out revenge for the man who pulled the trigger, British Sergeant, Tempest, played by Aml Ameen. He takes his revenge to the dark 1970’s London streets.

This is a very powerful story of revenge, the cost of it, and how far someone is willing to go. It’s promised to be raw and suspenseful, and if you like revenge films, then this is the one for you.

Strays – Releasing in Theaters

When Border Terrier Reggie, played by Will Ferrell, is abandoned on the streets by his owner, played by Will Forte, he turns to a Boston Terrier, played by Jamie Foxx, to help him find his way. Together, with other strays, they strike up a plan to get revenge on Reggie’s prior owner.

If you like films, like Homeward Bound or Look Who’s Talking Now, dog talking movies have always been liked, but never given high quality reviews. This crew is full of funny people, and talented actors, putting on the mantle of voice acting. If you like this combination, you might like this film, but there is no guarentee for it’s quality.

White Bird – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Julian Albans, played by Bryce Gheisar, is a bully. When he learns of his Grandmère, played by Helen Mirren, and her life in Nazi-occupied France he is tought a story of compassion and courage and aims to transform himself, and be better.

This is an interesting story told through two stories, that of Grandmère as a child in Paris, and the story of her Grandson hering the story. It’s sweet and based on R.J. Palacio’s book, White Bird.
