  • Spotlight on Rookidee

Rookidee is the route 1 bird from Galar in Generation 8 and as such was an early addition to most Trainer’s teams for their tour of that region, I’d wager. It was definitely the case for me and it remained on the team into the post-game. It had the distinction of being the first pure Flying Type available for capture barring the Legendary Pokemon Tornadus, too! While it does gain an additional type with its later evolution, that still puts it in a pretty exclusive club as there are very few pure Flying monsters out there.

The Pokedex tells us that this Pokemon is a bit of a neat freak – specifically the females; if you dirty their wings, expect to be pecked ruthlessly! They will try to disorient larger foes by flying around nimbly and seem to have an enjoyment when it comes to battle, unlike most little bird Pokemon. Each fight makes them a bit tougher, win, lose or draw.

One interesting thing about their design is that the white parts on their faces are just markings – not part of the eye. This eyespot mimicry, or ocellus, is a phenomenon often seen in nature. It makes a small creature look more intimidating to predators, among other things!

Corvisquire are the epitome of awkward middle stage. Design-wise they have very little to call their own. However! It is definitely all corvid in that it will employ tools in battle – anything it can grab with claws or beak, but rocks and rope are mentioned in the ‘dex. It’s got an ability to gauge an opponent in battle and a pretty big brain compared to other bird Pokemon.

    Spotlight on Corvisquire

Corviknight is where we get something really special, though. One of the best designs Pokemon has to offer in my humble opinion. Let me know if you agree in the comments!

This bird is used as a taxi in Galar, taking the place of the Fly HM for those Poke-British Trainers who want a quick trip from Stow On Side to The Slumbering Weald, or from anywhere else to anywhere else. Don’t try this in Paldea, though – you’ll find yourself at the mercy of Tinkaton! One hammer-smash away from a long fall!

Despite its size and metallic feathers, this Pokemon is a fantastic flier. It’s also extremely intelligent for a bird – the insult bird-brain might evolve into a compliment if we’re taking this steely raven into account!

It also has a Gigantimax form said to be able to hurl wind at velocities that would make typhoons blush! It has 8 steel feathers that can be used independently to attack as well. Quite the monster!

But can it blow away it’s opponents in Pokemon GO?

With a Max CP of 2777, 163 Attack, Defense of 192 and a Stamina of 221, it’s got a little staying power but it’s not hitting those hurricane season offensive levels. Stamina is only good if you have something to do with the extra time it grants you on the battlefield, unfortunately.

It’s a Flying Steel type so it’s weak to Electric and Fire type moves, and resists Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Ground, Normal, Psychic and Steel with extra resistance to Bug, Grass, and Poison type moves. So, few weaknesses and a decent number of resistances, at least!

In terms of Fast Attacks, you have Steel Wing, Air Slash, and Sand Attack, the first two of which being Stab. For Charged Attacks you get Iron Head, Sky Attack, and Payback, the first two of which being Stab. The Community Day charged attack option of Air Cutter is also available if you evolve your Rookidee to Corvisquire and Corviknight before September 6, 2025.

Shiny Rookidee is incredibly easy to spot as it shifts its royal blue for a warm beige. The evolved forms are just kind of a steely, desaturated gray so not nearly as cool looking as you’d hope! As always, Trainers, I’m wishing you the absolute best of luck with this month’s Community Day! Stay safe, stay hydrated, have fun, be kind and catch yourself a new Buddy while you’re at it!
