  • Spotlight on Lechonk

Lechonk was one of the first Pokemon revealed for Generation 9 back in 2022 and it became a pretty much instant fan fave. From its nonplussed expression to the literal ‘chonk’ in its name, people loved this thing like sizzling bacon on a Sunday morning! Its name even includes ‘Lechon’ which is the name of a much loved Spanish dish (Also very popular in the Philippines and many Latin American countries.) that features a whole pig that’s seasoned and then roasted over charcoal.

It’s the standard Route 1 mammal Pokemon – along the lines of Zigzagoon and Wooloo. It’s not particularly impressive in terms of team building so you’re probably likely to move it off the team after just a couple of Gyms, but that design really set it apart. The Pokedex tells us that this piggy uses its finely honed sense of smell for tracking down food and nothing else. It spurns all but the nicest of treats and due to this high-end diet it gives off an herbaceous odor that causes bugs to flee. I guess having one on the team while camping would make the mosquitoes leave you alone!

    Spotlight on Oinkologne

The main interest in Oinkologne’s design is the gender based dimorphism between male and female. It’s a pretty striking example of this often underutilized gimmick and it’s not something that’s ever been seen to this degree in an early route, normal type mammal. Unless you include male Bidoof having beards, kinda.

It’s still not the most impressive monster on the roster, but still. In terms of design? No notes! The Pokedex tells us that the males use their particular scent to entrance female Pokemon. Now, read that again – not female Lechonk or Oinkologne specifically! Just female Pokemon in general! What a player! One has to wonder if that’s a hint at it being a male chauvinist pig? The female is a little more gentle and just uses its scent to soothe all the Pokemon around it. A little nicer, right? Both these critters with a phonic version of Cologne in their names rely on their scent to interact with the world around them, and I think that’s kind of cool for a plain ol’ Normal type.

But let us ask ourselves, do they small like sweet victory in Pokemon GO? Or do they just stink up the place?

With a Max CP of 2949, Attack of 186, Defense of 153 and Stamina of 242… well. The scent of farmland is sweet to some and perhaps these porkers would do better on the farm than in Gym battles. However, it DOES outshine similar monsters! Furret only hits 1987 in terms of max CP, Linoone gets 1879, Dubwool hits 2478. The only one I can think of that fits a similar niche that does better is Stoutland with 3196 but it takes an extra evolutionary stage to get there! In terms of pure Normal types, it does outshine Kangaskhan’s 2924 just barely!

…the bad news being the above only rings true for male Oinkologne. Female versions have a different stat spread: Max CP of 2819, Attack of 169, Defense of 162 and Stamina of 251. It’s got a little more staying power at the cost of a lower Attack.

They are both pure Normal types and this means they are only weak to Fighting and they are super resistant to Ghost.

In terms of Fast Attacks you’re going to get Tackle and Takedown, both STAB. For Charged Attacks you’ve got Trailblaze, Dig and Body Slam, the latter of which is STAB. The Community Day move, Mud Slap, is an interesting choice but as a Ground type attack it doesn’t provide much utility except to give the Gastly line, Rotom, Litwick line and a few others (Skeledirge, Hisuian Typhlosion, the Honedge line etc) something to worry about by way of a very mild counter.

Shiny Lechonk is bright pink! And the evolved forms retain that coloration so they’re all nice and easy to spot!

As always, Trainers, I wish you the absolute best! Have fun, be kind, hydrate and get those steps in! But most of all, catch ’em all!
