The Bob Baker Marionette Theater is having it’s busiest and biggest year yet. With the Bob Baker Day concluding this weekend, one performance down on April 10 and another to go at Coachella on April 17, and the premiere of their first original show in 40 years Choo Choo Revue coming in May.
That being said, Bob Baker Marionette Theater isn’t done yet. This nonprofit puppet theater, which was founded in 1963, is now starting a Capital Campaign they have dubbed “In LA to Stay…Forever” with plans to purchase and restore it’s home in the historic York Theater at 4949 York Boulevard in Highland Park. Repairs needed include critical work on the roof, restrooms, and structural systems.
The theater has raised already $4.5 million, making it over halfway to their goal of $7 million, thanks to the support of Perenchio Foundation, the Kohl Family Foundation, the Ahmanson Foundation, Wallis Annenberg, the Chris and Melody Malachowsky Family Foundation, the Carol and James Collins Foundation, the Mohn Family Foundation, and Jack Black and Tanya Haden, among others. Now this Los Angeles icon, is asking the city and it’s fans to please help it cross the finish line.
There is a definite reason to support the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, as it is the largest and longest-running puppet theater in the United States. It serves over 145,000 people each year, with 20,000 of them being students arriving on field trips and workships. Helping the Bob Baker Marionette Theater complete the campaign will also bring long-term sustainability to the organization, ensuring that the Bob Baker Marionette Theater can continue serve Los Angeles for generations.
