Thanks to a Pepcom event, we connected with Big Fig. If you haven’t heard about Big Fig, they are a mattresses company that is specifically designed for larger customers since most beds are not designed for people over 200lbs.
When I say 200lbs I’m talking about each individual user, so a queen-size bed, which fits two people, is not designed for two overweight individuals to be sharing the bed together. And even so, the bed is not really designed for one overweight person to be laying on that bed, and as a result it will lead to the formation of divots, damaging the bed frame, or more importantly, leading to a bad sleeping experience for the user.
Big Fig mattresses, however, use 1600 springs in the production of their mattresses, specifically for the purpose of creating a incredibly firm vehicle for it’s users’ slumber. This is incredibly purposeful because a lot of overweight people can’t really get a good firm mattress, or at least a firm mattress that stays firm due to their construction. Big Fig however boasts being able to not only be an incredibly firm mattress for overweight individuals but also to be usable for over 20 years, due to its high-end construction for people over 300 lb.
While Big Fig did send us their Adjustable Base bed and Cooling Sheets, you can see our video for that Here, they also sent us their queen-size bed foundation as well as their heavy-duty bed frame.
The adjustable base is very easy to set-up, with it mostly being tongue and groove and turn knobs. The foundation bed on the other side, is also very easy and simple to set-up. The bed frame is simple to setup with the parts slotting easily into each other, and the foundation itself has directionalized pieces, with screws that slide into the other pieces. Once set up, you secure the unit with washers and wing-nuts. It’s important to point out that the foundation is very well built and has two center support beams to help disperse weight and support throughout the mattress as a whole.
If you have a house that has a very narrow staircase it can be difficult to get bed frames and box springs upstairs, these items however will easily make the journey though as they are shipped in narrow, but tall boxes.
Once you’ve set up the foundation for the bed, you can install the fabric cover that is designed to help hide the wood element, and give users a cleaner and designer look to your bed.
The one major drawback I can see from the mattress is that due to its firmness, it is definitely a better bed for a sleeper who lays on their back then someone who lays on their side. However, this is easily solved by getting a square pillow, to fill your neck hole, and picking up Big Fig‘s body pillow to go between your legs. The combination of these items have been very helpful and relieving for our test subjects who are specifically side sleepers.
Check back with us in about a month’s time and you’ll see a more in-depth review of our thoughts about the mattress over time. Otherwise, if you want to pick up your own Big Fig mattress and accessories, you can do so Here.
