Carnival Cruises and the Global Maritime Partners, specifically through its Center for Simulator Maritime Training (CSMART), have completed bridge‑simulator tests with the help of ports, hydrographic offices, pilots, and mariners to help define how the next-generation IHO S-100 navigation data will be used to bring maritime navigation into the next era!
The S-100 is a new digital framework developed by International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) designed to create more precise and efficient real-time maritime data for navigation in complex port environments.
Additionally, the S‑100 integrates multiple types of information, including electronic charts, port data, and real‑time marine conditions such as water levels, tides, and currents. The system takes all of the information and presents it into a unified navigational environment which is then displayed on a ship’s Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS). This tool will give mariners a more endepth and dynamic picture of their surroundings, in real time.
The results from this test will continue to inform collaboration across ports, hydrographic offices and industry partners, with further engagement planned at forums including the International Harbour Masters Association (IHMA) Congress later this year.
We only hope that this goes a long way to increasing the safety of large vessels at sea, and port collaboration in the future!
