Comic Book Spotlight: Championess

Legendary Comics has brought many fantastic tales to its readers including The Heart Hunter, Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero and AXIOM. The full library offers readers original tales and adaptations of familiar franchises. Illustrations are fitting for their content and emote the full weight of expression and journeys of the characters they contain. Now out of their collection, I’ve been lucky enough to check out Championess from writers Kelly Zekas and Tarun Shanker with art from Amanda Perez.

Basic Synopsis

In Championess, the reader is sent to Europe in the 1700s, to follow a tale from the back alleys and forgotten faces of the least among men of that time. There, in a place that serves as a debtor’s refuge from the law, we meet Elizabeth Wilkinson. She is making her way in the world by taking on challenges in informal boxing matches. Her small family is all she has in the world and she wants better than what the world has given them so far. Can she literally fight her way out of her troubles?

My Take

I found this comic to be a real page turner. It was easy to put myself in Liz’s place in the story and feel the kinds of frustrations and challenges she faced. I loved her fights in illustration, her first big fight made me wince and oof along with each blow landed. The quieter moments add many familiar layers of feelings I have felt with challenges to what society expects and not fitting into perceptions of biased hiring practices even when skills for the position have been met or exceeded. I would recommend this comic for anyone who is a fan of underdog characters, want to read about a female lead in a contact sport or anyone who is just a fan of boxing in general.
