Night Terrors: Sour Candy – Comic Book Spotlight

Night Terrors is a great long form series of horror and sometimes sci-fi storylines. We’ve covered Second Nature, 13 Horsemen, and Graveyard Moon in the past. This time we got an early copy of Sour Candy. Storm King, and specifically Sandy King, have given so many independent comics a home and their creators a place in which to share their stories.

This is a 100+ page one-off comic and as a result, we don’t want to spoil to much for you, so we’ll be walking a thin line. Be warned.

Basic Synopsis

Phil is a simple man, with a girlfriend he cares for, but a job he dedicates most of his life to. When asked by his girlfriend to put off his weekend work plans, and get some candy for her and their day off together, Phil finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. While at the store he overlooks a disheveled woman who is ignoring the bad behavior of her screaming child.

However, when Phil attempt to see if the child is fine, the boy simply offers him a piece of candy that he unfortunately accepts. Now Phil’s life has shifted and been warped. The same boy that he exchanged a fateful moment with is in his house, and everyone thinks it’s his child.

Can he figure out why this boy is doing this to him, before the effects of him on his life begins to waste him away?

My Take

This book is really into demonic presences, the feeling of unease, and seems to play with the concept of unwillingly being forced into parenthood. Writer, Kealan Patrick Burke, also takes subtle jabs at the workplace’s value on employees without families. It was very engaging though as a story, and it’s very manageable and conclusive. While I wanted more from 13 Horsemen, one of the prior Night Terrors stories, this story feels very concluded and satisfyingly so.

Artist, Jason Felix, used photo styled panels in this comic book, and highly artistic painting styled character art. It’s very stunning, engaging, and interesting.
