Adult Swim celebrates its 25th anniversary and with it they have turned to one of their most well-loved shows Robot Chicken to provide the special.
So while this is not a movie or a season of television, we are still going to review it. As always, we break down our reviews by story, acting, and overall. So lets jump on into it.
Story 5/10
The general concept of the special is that in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Adult Swim, the network executives have put together a cruise full of all of the characters.
The special is told and two parts, the events on the cruise, and the aftermath trial that follows it.
I don’t want to spoil what happened, but the venue of the cruise ship creates a lot of opportunities to not only include things like Sea Lab 2021 and Toonami.
However, the split of the two sections of the special, flips back and forth and barely works as a narrative. I really wish it was just told either in order or starting off with the trial and then leading into a flashback narrative.
It is very interesting though how they’re able to connect and groups of specific characters from certain shows, and mix and match them through out the special. There are a lot of deep cuts to a lot of characters within Adult Swim.
Acting 9/10
There are a lot of voice actors who have returned for several roles that they played throughout Adult Swim’s history, including Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Venture Brothers, and many more, but for certain roles, those actors didn’t return and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios utilized several of the already included voice actors to take over and do homages to the characters from the history of Adult Swim.
For the most part they’ve all done. A very good job, with standouts being Doc Hammer, Seth Green, and Matt Senreich who really captured the energy of the original voice talent. Also, major shout outs to Mike Tyson, Joe Pera, Patrick Warburton, and Dana Snyder for bringing their amazing characters back.
Overall 7.5/10
It’s not amazing, it won’t knock your socks off. However, if you are a long-time fan of Adult Swim, this will connect with you in a lot of ways, as well as scratch the itch of nostalgia.
Conner’s Final Thoughts
There’s a line they use in the fake bumps in the middle of the special. In one of them, they comment that if you don’t see characters from your favorite shows from Adult Swim, then clearly the show wasn’t good enough to be included. Seeing that and having missed a couple characters that I wish were there, I will say I did chuckle quite a bit at that.
