Conner’s Critique: Our Flag Means Death Season 2

Were you a fan of the first season of Our Flag Means Death? We definitely were. This show subverted our expectations so greatly and is once again an amazing series by Taika Waititi, but does the second season stand up to the first? You will know our thoughts in our newest review.

As always, we break down our reviews by story, acting, and overall. So let’s jump on it to it.

Story 10/10

Our last season left us with our two titular heroes, Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach separated by bad choices and cold feet. Where one was eager to reunite, after learning of the errors of his ways, the other was sent into a great darkness. That’s where we pick up with Edward Teach, obsessed with only one thing, Pirating.

It turns out there can be too much of a bad thing though, as the crew underneath him is losing their minds and souls as they are constantly pushed through battle and battle, and now sit on the edge of what they can withstand.

On the other side, Stede is fighting apparently and constantly trying to get back to Teach while also dealing with the belief that Teach might never forgive him. What follows after their long journey to finally be reunited is a fun and humorous journey of forgiveness, acceptance, and redemption.

This series is incredible well-written and quite a joy to experience. Season two perfectly follows up the first, and is even more incredibly gay.

Acting 10/10

Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi as Edward Teach is some of the best character work I have ever seen. An intelligent show. The way Darby disappears into the role and has no fear of commitment to it is a testament to not only Taikia Wiatiti’s ability to direct while also being in the scene. The relationship between the two talents and how well they work together while acting in so impressive.

I know they’ve been friends for quite some time, and they talk about it all the time. It’s just so easy and they play off each other, but sometimes it’s hard to believe that there’s even a script for their scenes together. It feels like they are just old friends enjoying each other’s company and speaking what comes to mind and what the characters would say.

The rest of the cast is an amazing job of playing through a myriad of emotions, but a lot of extra attention is deserve towards Con O’Neill and Vico Ortiz who went on some of the most intense emotional journeys this season due to where they were left off last.

Overall 10/10

This show is so good. It makes you wonder why we don’t give all other shows over to Taika Waititi to make them better, but then he would become overstretched and I’m sure they would all suffer for it. That being said, I don’t see why Taika Waititi can’t direct and write a guest episode on each of these shows? Right? Right?

Conner’s Final Thoughts

This season is so great and the guest appearance of actors like Mini Driver, Will Arnett, and Rachel House are so amazing and so well placed within the series that they are fun and just keep building and expanding the world of our flag means death.
