Jubilee, from Carnival Cruise Line, has become the first cruise ship to refuel with LNG at Isla Tropicale in Roatán, advancing the company’s overall decarbonization strategy. LNG is liquefied natural gas, which is a lower-emission fuel for power generation, industry, and transportation. LNG is one of the most readily available, proven and commercially scalable lower-emission fuels for the maritime industry. This can help reduce direct carbon emissions by up to 20% and almost fully avoiding emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and particulate matter.
This effort has been a collaboration between the government and industry partners of Honduras. They utilize a mobile LNG fueling solution to refuel ships at Isla Tropicale in Roatán, Honduras. This allows LNG-capable ships to refuel with minimal disruption to their routes. Carnival has 11 LNG-capable cruise ships in operation, and plans to add 7 more by the end of 2033.
LNG serves as one of many tools that Carnival Cruise Line intends to implement to reduce its emissions footprint and pursue a net zero greenhouse gas emissions from ship operations by 2050.
Beyond this event, Carnival Corporation’s investments through environmental stewardship includes local partnerships in Roatán and long-term economic impact. The beach at Isla Tropicale earned the Honduras Blue Flag Award in 2024 and 2025, for meeting high standards in environmental management, water quality, safety, accessibility and sustainable tourism.
