Comic Recs Worthy of Coco Chanel

I love my LBD. Little Black Dress of course. It’s a powerful staple in my wardrobe and I feel glamorous every chance I get to wear it.

Today we celebrate the woman who trademarked the Chanel suit and started the mainstream popularity of the LBD (little black dress). Not to mention who has her own perfume line named after her. Can you guess who? None other than Coco Chanel, aka Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel.

Chanel in her later years, in around the 1920’s, embodied beauty and glamor. But things were not always this way for her. Growing up in Saumur, France, her mother passed when she was only 12 years old. Her father, who worked as a peddler, then put her in an orphanage.

Being raised by nuns, she learned how to sew. She later became a singer, I am not sure where the credit comes from, but she had a brief career as a singer in clubs where she got her name “Coco”. Rumor has it, the name came from one of the songs she used to sing, but Chanel herself said Coco is a shortened version of cocotte, the French word for “kept woman”.

She met, and dated, two men who were instrumental in her first fashion venture, Etienne Balsan and Arthur Capel. Those names I don’t know, but I’m no expert here.

She opened her first shop selling hats in Paris’s Rue Cambon in 1910 and later expanded to more stores and began making clothes.

Her first “great success” came from a dress she made from an old jersey. People asked her where she got it, and offered to make them for them. Chanel states that her fortune is built on that old jersey that she put on because she was cold in Deauville. That jersey later turned to costumes for plays, and as we know, so much more, including her first and most iconic perfume, Chanel No. 5.

In honor of this iconic woman, I will give my very biased favorite fashion related comics that I believe Coco would approve of. So in no particular order, let’s get to it…
