John Felix Anthony Cena was born on April 23, 1977 in Newbury, Massachusetts. Growing up in a Catholic household full of brothers and a father who was a ring announcer, he was almost destined to be a wrestling fan. He idolized Hulk Hogan, and would make cardboard championship belts for himself and his brothers to wear. A victim of bullying in youth, he started body building at the age of 12. While in college he was a NCAA Division III center and team captain in football and graduated with a defree in exercise physiology and body movement.
Following in his love of wrestling, and his adoration of Hulk Hogan he moved to California in the late 90s and decided to switch from bodybuilding to wrestling. While waiting to make his break into the industry, and attending Ultimate Pro Wrestling’s Ultimate University while wrestling in local flea markets.
In 2000 John Cena made his first, but unofficial, debut in Wrestling during a SmackDown! taping, performing as The Prototype. He then received another tryout in 2001, which lead to him signing a developmental contract eventually wrestling under the name Mr. P, and eventually making his WWE Television debut under his actual real name in June of 2002. Immediately he became a fan favorite amoungst viewers of the show.
His adopting of a villainous trash-talking rapper helped boost his likeability, and even became more likeable when he turned tinto a heroic goody-two shoes character from 2003 until 2025, where he performed a heel turn at Elimination Chamber in 2025. This was a move he had really been homing to do for quite some time, so he is happy he could do so before his retire from the sport.
Outside of his work in wrestling, Cena is known for work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and has even granted the most wishes at the company, over 650.
In 2006, John Cena started in his first movie, The Marine, in collaberation of WWE Studios, WWE motion pictures division. This was during a time where WWE worked to create movies to branch out and give some of thier more liked, and skilled, wrestlers the chance to reach a larger audience. The next film they worked on together was 12 Rounds in 2009 followed by Legendary in 2010.
Cena has also played supporting and cameo roles in films like Fred: The Movie, Trainwreck, Sisters, Daddy’s Home. He continued acting to eventually star more prodominately within The Wall, Surf’s Up 2, and even as the main voice in Ferdinand. While a lot of people may know him for his roles in Bumblebee and the Fast and the Furious series, in 2021 he stared as Christopher Smith, A.K.A. Peacemaker, in “The Suicide Squad” taking a horrible person and making them into a flawed, but oddly likeable villian.
