Happy Birthday And Recommendations For DC Comics The Atom!

While most people these days know of Ray Palmer The Atom, thanks to the works of Brandon Routh through the Arrowverse, Palmer was actually the second iteration of The Atom.

The Atom was first and foremost represented as Al Pratt and a character created for Proto-DC Comics, All-American Publications. All-American Publications was the creator of figures like Green Latner, The Flash, Hawkman, and Wonder Woman!

The Atom was created by Bill O’Connor with art from Ben Flinton flushing out the design.

With that in mind, here are some of our favorite comics with the Original Atom!

All-American Comics #19 (1940)

Al Pratt was just a small little guy who has had to deal with bullies all his life. However, he works with a fight trainer to help him build up his body to protect himself, but when Mary gets kidnapped, he realizes his training could be better suited for more than self defense.
The Flash #137 (1963)

The Flash, Barry Allen, pays a visit to the Flash, Jay Garrick, of an alternative reality on Earth-Two due to an occurrence happening in both worlds. The villain behind it, Vandal Savage, has captured many heroes including Doctor Mid-Nite, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, Johnny Thunder, the Green Lantern, and the Atom in his first appearance in the Silver Age comics. It’s nice to see the return of the hero as they all work together to take down Savage.
Zero Hour: Crisis In Time #3 (1994)

Extant wants to reshape the world and time to his whims, but The Justice Society continues to fight in an attempt to stop him, but are obviously outmatched. Extant wields a weapon to age the members of the team, and unfortunately members like Doctor Fate, Wildcat, and Sandman are aged, while The Atom suffers the ultimate sacrifice in his last appearance in DC Comics.

What version of the Atom do you like the most?
