William James “Willem” Dafoe was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, on July 22, 1955 to Muriel Isabel and Dr. William Alfred Dafoe, with five older sisters raising him and his brother. While his name is William, in high school, he took on the Dutch version of the name Willem, liking it more then his birth name.
Dafoe studied drama at University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1973, but dropped out after 18 months to join “Theatre X” in Milwaukee, and then moved to New York City in 1976. In New York he studied under Richard Schechner, at The Performance Group, and then left the company to found The Wooster Group. Dafoe continued to work with the performance group well into the 2000s, well after being established as a popular film star.
Dafoe made his film debut with an uncredited role in Heaven’s Gate in 1980, and continued to star in amazing films like To Live and Die in L.A., Platoon, and The Last Temptation of Christ. We could sit here and talk about all of his roles in films and acting career on stage, but this article would go on forever.
Dafoe took on the role of Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin in the 2002 film, Spider-Man. Which we have been a huge fan of, and frankly is one of our favorite roles of a comic book villian. Due to his well loved role, he reprised the role of Norman Osborn in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

The Amazing Spider-Man #121 (1973)) Subtitled “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” this story is kicked off when the Green Goblin personality returns to Norman Osborn, and he takes Gwen Stacy hostage, leading to her falling from the Brooklyn Bridge. After Spider-Man isn’t able to save her, it makes clear that Green Goblin will always be Spider-Man’s most dangerous archnemesis. One of the most iconic deaths in comic book history. |

Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1 (2004) This was the darker genre of Marvel Comics, in this series, Norman Osborn is revealed as the Green Goblin, is put in prison, and to get his revenge, he sets off a series of events that puts Aunt May directly in danger. This comic book series shows the true evil and that there is no limit to his depravity. |
